Guys! They are only babies that are establishing themselves!

Let em do what they want as strange as it may be, once they start to die off, wilt and yellow, hack em down to ground level and burn the ferns to rid any chance of asparagus beetle.

Top dress the bed at least 2 inch thick (I use my own homemade compost) dunna the script with Nicos seaweed n sand mix.

Honest! They'll be fine and more than happier for it!

      Hi Deano

      Thank you for the advice

Sorry I have no patience and slightly obsessed on this, but was just wondering what fern growth others had, in asparagus that has just started producing harvestable spears

        Hi INRIP,

I'll take a pic of my two year old bed for you next time I'm at the plot.

Have just cut the ferns dowe, they stayed green for a long time, seem to have been like a tortoise and kept plodding on un-noticed and in end had some decent fern on the ones that decided to grow

Just got round to getting seaweed, any tips for putting this on, wondering if it will just dry out and blow away, but cant dig it in ?

Those look like nice healthy plants.
I just dump seaweed on top of my asparagus plants. I don’t bother washing it. I think you should do well come spring.
This will be my third spring for my asparagus. It’s in my polytunnel. If it doesn’t yield much this year I will take it out as the space is just too precious to not get good returns on.
I’ve used seaweed as a mulch outside on other plants and it has never blown away.

Just bung it on, INRIP. I chucked a load on in October, about 3" thick, and then added about 3" of leaves. The leaves have blown about a bit, but the seaweed stayed put.

Thank you mucklover and bario1 for the information. Laid it out last night on path to wash in the rain and will put it on the beds tonight.

I don't bother washing mine... the salt might help keep the slug population down!

Thanks Bario1. Issue I have is put on some sharp sand I lightly washed and think it had a small amount of salt in it. So thought might as well get some use out of the monsoon season and semi wash the seaweed rather than risk too much salt. Chopped some up in a tub tonight with garden shears in no time and plan to mix it in the spud bed unless advised not to
