Potato Lady C.

Got a bit of a shock today but a nice shock.

SWMBO asked for some more new spuds my next container in line was a 30lt green trug so off I went. I set the seed on 17/03 and it resided in the GH till the end of April, so at 12 to 13 weeks I should get something.

Can you imagine my delight when these two asteroids came to light

So that is peas doing well, cumbers doing well and now this. The only thing I have done differently this year is add some rock dust when I refreshed my compost. I may be living in hope but am hoping I have found something that makes a difference.

Now for a quality baker with my steak.

Very nice - and a lot bigger than mine. I think this year is a good one for potatoes, certainly a lot better than last year. The results of the buckets of Lady C are in, and from 4 buckets with 3 potatoes in each:
Last year 3.5kg (0.29kg/seed potato)
This year 5.6kg (0.47kg/seed potato)

Last year the Lady C got blackleg, which certainly didn't help them, and this is only the 2nd year I have grown them, but I'm happy with this result. As a comparison, my Desiree have yielded a consistent average of 0.53kg/seed potato in 2015 and 2016. It will be interesting to see if this year is any better as I have done nothing different.

I usually leave 6 dustbins of LadyC as a last harvest before my main crop so they are usually coming out the ground at about 18 weeks plus, this way I always get a few chippers/bakers off them but I have never had any this early in the year.

SWMBO divided the largest in to two half each along with fresh garden peas and a few mushrooms made the perfect accompaniment to a rare rump steak.

Wow, they look amazing. I've got a few Lady C. out in the potato patch, can't imagine they will look as good though.

They are beauts! I've only dug up one short row of Lady C so far and they were mostly normal sized new potatoes. Am now hoping that the rows I leave for a bit will have a few whoppers in them.
