New Raised Beds

Hello Folks,

I've just cleared the bottom of my garden with a view of trying some veg next year in 5 x 1m square beds.

My query is whether I should plant something now to improve the soil in any way, be it veg or green manure?

I'm new to this so any advice gratefully appreciated.

Hi Broadway, and welcome to the Vine!

Personally, I think that I would get hold of some manure (most stables will be happy to see you collect for free!), bung it on and let the worms incorporate it for you over the winter.

A light fork in the Spring, and you'll be away!

Ahh - I see a flaw in the plan already, tho' - if you plan to use one of your beds next year for carrots/parsnips etc, don't manure or you'll end up with veg that will taste good, but won't win any prizes in the show - unless it is for 'funniest shaped carrot'.....!

I'd sow a green manure for overwintering on the roots bed, and dig it in in the Spring.
