Transplant shock

hi,

any tips to get through this phase ?

planted some small pumpkin plants the other day - after germinating for a few weeks.

i watered them thoroughly.

the next day ...

they started out ok in the morning.

by lunchtime half had wilted - by end of day all had wilted.

gave them water.

next morning, they seemed better, but some seem long gone for this world.

i think the roots may have become damaged during transit.

is there anything to do to help those plants struggling ? at the moment, some of them have completely collapsed, despite watering.

Are they in the sun? If so, a bit of shade might help.

Did you water the hole before you put the plant in it? I do (when I remember!).
Also plant out in the evening when its cooler so that they have all night to settle in before the sun comes up.
Were the plants in individual pots/modules or did you have to separate them?
Size matters too when planting out - not too small and they should be well rooted.

None of this helps your wilting plants but if you can work out where you may have gone wrong it may help for next time.

there do get quite a bit of sun; so i'll try to shade them off.

i did not water the hole.

although i did plant them in the evening.

they weren't that big, but getting too big for their pots.

but the root systems weren't that advanced.

rookie mistakes i've made here.

i think it's probably too late to start again - i'm pushing planting pumpkins now i think.

all i can do is shade them off and hope for the best.

They may pick up, don't despair! If you have seeds to spare its worth trying a few even at this stage. You may not get a giant pumpkin but you may be able to grow some of the small ones.
That's what I'd do anyway - try anything and if it doesn't work, don't do it again

Andy try sowing in newspaper pots that way there's no root disturbance when you plant out.

thanks PMveggiechicken. appreciate your thoughts. i've had to apply some creative thinking to shade the plants - a few old bits of furniture. although i really hope they grow out of this soon.
