Squash Success of the season 2017

Every year I grow Pumpkins with so-so success...

However this year after a re-think and a Dalek filled to the brim with horse manure / bedding.







Plonked a Pumpkin into this 2 month old manure. Its gone "mad for it" as they say in manc land.

So then built a plastic mesh ladder, 18" wide for it to trail down. Then looped the snaking back on itself so the female flowers are alongside the male flowers...

I have also been watering more this year with all the sun but also reading the Which report on Watering research back from June issue.

What variety is it?

Unfortunately I'm not sure what variety it is, it could be a crown prince, a waltham butternut squash or a Hokia Kuri ? I forgot to label it... (story of my life)

The first two are squashes not sure I know the third......perhaps your success is being measured against the size pumkins can grow when you are actually growing squashes?

The 3 images are all the same plant, Pumpkin on steriods...

I'll have to be carefull of "roid raging" squashes...

No-akira, I've moved your thread into "Vegging out".
You'd posted on the "Fruit and Vegetable Showcase" Board where one can "Post pictures of your prize winning crop etc".
So far, you have a lot of leaves and a couple of immature unnamed cucurbits.
If you win any prizes with them, that's the time to post on the Showcase!

OK my mistake thought Showcase = growing success for season.

There is a lot growth but their is also equal amounts of setting fruit. So fingers crossed.

Your right should have used genus Squash in title rather than Pumpkin.

I've been ripping the tops of the male flowers off to keep them open as long as possible. Not sure if this is helping the Squash fruit to take.

I'm going to take a guess that it's a crown prince from your list of options as the other two would be a different shape fruit.
Best way to pollinat is pick a fully open male flower pull all the petals off It and and wipe it round the middle of a female flower.
It can be a bit more technical than that if you're worried about cross pollination.but if you're like me and just want a fully grown fruit, you don't really care who the daddy is

This is my first year and the squashes are what I am most proud of.

Need to plan better as work has got in the way of the allotment.
