I've Crimson Flowered Broad Beans as well to sow in spring.

The only broad bean I know of that you would plant now is Luz de Otono. I've just sown a bed of them but DT Brown have an off of half price plants on at the moment

To gain 50% discount you must quote code D18LUZ at the checkout.

I've not tried sowing any other varieties this time of the year but you could always try it to see if it works.

You can sow some types (Aquadulce Claudia an Suttons Dwarf) in November for a slightly earlier crop of beans next year.

You don't want to be sowing broad beans for overwintering yet, its far too early - they want to be fairly compact

I've just got some Luz de Otono which will be going in the ground shortly - I'm hoping they're tasty as it will be a really good way to extend the season

the Luz de Otono sown on the 3rd is up, the first 10 little shoots are poking above soil today. Guess the rain in between then and now has helped. Let's hope the rest come up along with the sowing on the 7th.

Mmm 3 harvests of broad beans a year.

p.s. Vix are yours seeds of plants?

Plants Jay, they were part of an offer I ordered from DT Browns - they're looking strong and healthy so look promising.

My biggest problem is there is a giant spider living with my existing broadies, which need to come out - and I've not built up the courage yet

Guys, as far as I know, you'll need to protect Luz de Otoño from frost. They grow these down south from me and they don't tolerate frost apparently.

I've got hoops, nets and fleece on standby already. Not going on till after beans have set otherwise it's just green manure and I've got field beans for that.

                    Nah that's a garden spider - I have a few of them, I don't mind them!

This one's a proper beastie - I'd take a pic but he's incredibly fast. I like to tell myself he's coming out to shake his fist(s?) at me for getting his house wet
