  • Brassica woes

It's been a wipe out year for my cabbage. The question is, what is eating them. The last lot were well netted, but were munched during the daytime. It's not slugs and snails. Could it be birds? After a test, a pigeon sitting on the netting would bring the cabbages in range, but it would be pretty awkward. Or do mice eat brassicas?

Not slugs and snails as the damage has happened during the day whilst they're skulking under stones.

Perhaps some cabbage whites visited before you netted. And only now the caterpillars are munching ?

            Rabbits ?
A picture of the damage might be revealing.

Slugs have a tendency to get inside the hearts of cabbages and can then eat them from there at any time of day (or night).

I vote pigeons, all mine are stumps, but a photo can reveal a lot

Thanks all. Not rabbits. Almost certainly not caterpillars (the damage isn't right). The stumps look like pigeons, but I'm quite surprised that they negotiated the netting. If no one thinks that mice might be responsible, this must be my only choice. And the lesson is even better netting next year...

Is the netting well weighted down to the ground? Birds are sneaky things and creep under netting!

We've lost brassicas to rats, any chance of a photo to help identify the perp.

'My' snails don't seem to care what time of day it is - In fact I'd say they actually enjoy sunbathing!
