Savoy Cabbage question

I noticed when checking over my cabbages this morning that the heart of it has become somewhat 'frilly', with what looks like long narrow leaves developing, along with little 'bobbly' bits....does anyone know what this means? The cabbage itself looks very green and healthy, and they were planted out in early may.

Hello CloveGirl, I think it means you should have eaten them before now. It sounds as if they are bolting - going to seed. I do hope you can rescue something from them.

Thanks for that Alice....I will go and see if there are that haven't got to this stage yet. I am a total newbie to veg growing so didn't really know when they should have been ready

Hi alice i wonder if you can help me. My savoys say they wont be reading til october (the packet that is, I havent yet got to the stage where my plants are talking to me! ) but they are really big now, although they don't seem to be very hearty. Hearing that they can bolt has got me a bit worried should i pick them now or wait?

Hello Raine, I eat mine as I go along. I don't like to be left with a great big crop of cabbage all ready at the one time. Maybe you could start eating every second one leaving space for the others to get bigger.
