We have village show this weekend....

How do i display shallots, do i bend stalk over and tie or just cut the stalks and tie?

Kestrel potatoes are they classed as white or coloured?

How to show radish?

How to show chard?

Help help help it's getting soooo close and I am very nervous!!!!

Hi Headfry, good luck at the show. I don't show so I don't really know the answers but I would say Kestrel were whites. Here's a few pics. from the Shrewsbury show last weekend with some exhibits, hope someone can help you with more specific tips.

It's our show this weekend too, HF - and I know nothing about this but SO want to join in - so I went to another local show last weekend to crib up a bit!

BUT out of your q's, I think the only one I know the answer to is the shallots, which were show trimmed and tied, and shown on a saucer of sand (makes them stand up better?)

On the veg front I'm putting in our beetroot ('3, round, tops trimmed to 7.5cm') for sure, and as there is a cookery section (I'm more confident with this!) I'm putting in a Marble Cake (recipe supplied).

I'm going to assess the runner beans on Friday to see if I can find 7 which look vaguely the same, and I might be tempted to pull up a short row of carrots to see if I can find 3 which haven't been carrot fly'd!

Our entry fee is 25p per class and the prizes are £5 for first prize in the veg classes, £1 first prize in the cookery!

I think that if you get there early and hang around to see how the others are putting theirs out and make sure you have string handy, and a trimming knife.

I would have thought that the officials of the particular show would let you have instructions. There are differences in presentation required, different numbers of veg or fruit, presented on a plate, in sand etc. They must have their own rules, otherwise how can you know if you're infringing them?
