Veg questions from a Novice

Hi there ,

So far Everything I chose to grow has turned out well etc.

I was wondering when you pick Dwarf Green beans do they grow back ?

Also when do you know when is the right time to pick chillis

Also when a veg plant or herb became root bound in a biggish pot instead of risking the plant breaking I simplly put it inside a bigger pot with compost/soil inside , Is this standard practice , it seems to have worked thus far

I cannot help with dwarf beans, because I also am growing them for the first time. With the climbing beans, once you pick one lot of beans, there are usually other flowers and miniature beans elsewhere on the plant, which grow on and are ready for picking a few days later.

With chillies it depends if you want them red or green? I was late starting mine last year, so I had to pick them all green to get them off the plant before frost (jalapeno chillies cannot be overwintered, though I believe some other varieties can)

I am growing Jalapeno and Cayenne so I guess I can wait till early September and pick them

Potting on most plants is vital for their well being, some however need to be pot bound, the Bird of Paradise flower being one. I grew one from seed, kept potting it on and had an enormous plant, but no flowers. One year I didn't pot it on and low and behold it flowered.(Sadly it didn't survive being in storage for 4 months when we moved to Scotland)

With dwarf French beans pick the ones that are ready and more will follow. Unless of course they get eaten by slugs/rabbits before they even get big enough to flower

Jalapeno and Cayanne will over winter provided you csn keep them frost free. I have both of thrm growing and they are 3 year old.
I bring them into the conservatory and prune them back at the end of the season and in the spring they ususlly start to produce shoots and grow again.

I have several overwintered jalapenos, they are currently covered in chillies

Sounds like we need to install a conservatory :-)
All of ours perished before Christmas in the (unheated) greenhouse!

How to prune the chillies

You don't have to wait until your jalapenos go red (although they should be hotter when red). Picking them green might prompt the plant to produce more fruit. This morning we've pickled three jars of green (and fairly hot) jallies.
You can always pick one fruit for a taste test if you're not sure.
