  • Moving onions?

I got 4 BIG onions off a friend of mine in the spring. As i had no room in my garden at the time i just put all 4 into a big bucket. Now, they are very big and they won;t get any bigger in this bucket but as all my parsnips have bit the dust in the garden, i have room and was wondering if i moved them from the bucket to the garden will it do they any harm?

    Any onion experts out there?

Most onions are ready for harvesting now - I'll be pulling mine up soon.
You may be too late to gain anything by moving them.

Many competition growers grow in containers, what makes you think they won't grow any more?

I grow red onions and they seem to have a lot of thin roots, I don't know if white onions are the same but I wouldn't move them at this stage of the season.

One of the ways to bring on ripening of onions is to ease them out of the ground, which breaks the roots and causes them to die down. I suspect this will happen if you move them, but as others have said, it is time for them to start ripening now anyway.

Because they're almost touching each other in the bucket lol.

I think I'll just leave them there then and harvest them in the next couple of weeks.
