Success(es) so far

Marb's recent posts have given me a bit of Schadenfreude if I'm honest - anyhow made me consider my growing year thus far - its not been great in general but some things have done really well - so I'm going to list the things that have done really well - it might be a short list but so what...

Potatoes - through weed suppressant - probably had my biggest ever spuds and even got some decent ones from those bunged into MFBs

Chillies - still awaiting some of the more exotic ones to deliver but Jalepeno have been very productive

Toms - blighted on the plot but Deano's seeds have turned into a triumph of tom in the GH my new favourite for taste - many thanks

Beetroot - best ever

Onions - not massive but better taste than I've had before

Carrots - yet to harvest but for the first time ever I think I've got something *to* harvest - in MFB's on top of the compost bins out of the way of carrot fly (in theory)

Blackcurrants - great crop

Blackberries - blackbirds have enjoyed them - I did get a few

Grapes - haven't harvested yet but boy is it looking promising... fingers crossed

*Fingers crossed* might become my gardening mantra

Spuds- pretty good so far
Chillies- stunning
Cucumbers- going mental
Swede- brilliant
Cabbage, sprouts & leeks- to early to say
Everything else average and in more than a few cases very below average.

Very mixed here so far.

Some of the spring salads, notably the pak choi, were very good.
Good crop of early turnips
Earliest tomatoes ever, but all ripened at once in the heat we had in early summer.
Indoor peppers ditto
Cucumbers superb
About half of the potatoes seem very good (biggest yield per seed potato is 1.4kg, smallest is 0.2kg)
Black and white currants excellent
Leeks look very good (compared with normal)
Almost everything else has been smaller or later than usual (spinach, calabrese, peas, beans, courgettes, onions) or at least partly riddled with pests (cabbage, blueberries, strawberries, beetroot, french beans) or isn't big enough to tell (carrots, parsnips, broccoli, brokali, swedes, fennel, kohlrabi, apples).

Resigned myself to just a greenhouse growing season this year as very limited due to time constraints etc, but more than happy thus far!

More about bulking my stock for next year to be honest!

The few outdoor crops I have:

Asparagus did really well harvesting 1 to 2 good size bunches per week through the relatively short cropping season these plants have.

Strawberries were a "dream with cream"

An abundance of raspberries and waiting for the result on the fruit tree's which have just flown this year, but will have to take a step back once harvested and consider how to prune to get em back in shape!

Not a very productive year, more of a learning curve for things to come.

Have to agree, one of the best tasting tomatoes I have ever had the pleasure of, and that post as just made my year! So all wasn't in vein!

But now reading through, wish I had sown Marks "Summer Cider"

So what sort of toms are they baldy/deano?

Havnt grown much with family stuff at start of the yr so concentrating on salads, Chillies really.

Chillis ..bought plants are now looking very happy in new pots and Chillies are appearing.
Salads.. Romping away

Potato compost leftover last yr have produced top growth so may have a surprise spud or two..hoping

Radish , beets, pak choi, sp onions have all germinated and growing on.

Just happy to have something going on in the GH tbh and planning to harvest at least something over winter this yr.

CG, a variety called "Rosella" Purple in colour, but the taste is out of this world!

Pretty much everything that germinated has done really well, Crimson Crush tommies were cooked as seedlings by a careless gardener who went out for the day and left the lid on the heated propagator. Only Cayenne chillies actually sprouted and the first ones are just colouring up, so might get to try on of these later next week. Blight got my tatties, so I lost my PFA's, Leeks and Red Onions from seed are still growing and are looking very good, ditto beets are still growing with little sign of any more going to seed(had a few a couple of weeks ago).
I will be making a list for next years seeds soon and I will be looking at earlier tatties and or blight resistant ones and broad beans that are not the Sutton, nice small plants, but in a raised bed they didn't produce much of a crop.

I've grown yellow courgettes for the first time and have lots of round ones (Floridor) and a fair few long ones (Atena Polka).
Loads and loads of cukes.
The patty pan are great. They look so cool and funky, grow like mad and really brighten up the garden.
My blue kuri squash are growing! Yayyyy! Took a while for the male and female flowers to grow in sync but they got there in the end.
If the thickness of foliage is anything to go by, the spuds are doing well.
Nero di Toscana kale is also doing well despite the best efforts of the cabbage whites.
Toms; hard to say. They look good but, unfortunately, all but two so far have had blossom end rot. Here's hoping they don't all go that route.
Calabrese, under mesh, is being left to its own devices and looks to be doing well.
Had some lovely loganberries.
The cucamelons are flowering up.
All in all the garden is looking remarkably lush and, joy of all joys, the next door neighbour has -for reasons I know not- spent the entire week cutting down the dense trees that he planted many years ago which were easily 15ft high and plunged the garden into premature darkness halfway through the day. Now there's way more light in the garden and I'm sooooo happy

Courgettes producing most days
Cucumber giving them away.
Telephone peas lots in freezer
Spinach and Chard doing well
Lettuce doing well
Kale started picking that the other week
Charlotte are tasty.
Nasturtiums taking over the garden love the pods pickled.
Strawbs have finished but theres plenty of Raspberries and Blackberries
Worcester Pearmain apples had the first of those this week.
Rhubarb's about finished but I've got lots in the freezer

only down side the Toms they're late just started picking the GH ones today.

This is my first year on the plot, so everything is the best crop I've ever had

Admittedly, some things haven't worked, but 5 boxes of spuds in the garage, freezer is already half full and it's only the beginning of August!

Out of 8 sweetcorn sowed, only two came up
