Knowing that the week ahead will be mild, I`m considering planting out winter peas, something I`ve not done before, so which variety would you suggest and why? will any variety do? or are there ones to avoid?

Meteor peas are quite winter hardy, as long as we don't get an Arctic one! Also Douce Provence is the traditional choice.
Don't sow them before the end of September, though, probably better in October in the SW, now is much too early. The plants need to be small and sturdy to make it through, cloche or fleece help in the coldest weather.
Good luck!

Meteor peas are great,I'm growing them again, they stood up well to icy conditions here with no bother, unlike my broccoli (the packet says fully winter hardy even in exposed areas, not waterlogged soil). Sow late October to November. They'll stay small overwinter but shoot up in Feb/March to give early peas that taste great & keep on producing, worth growing because there's not much else to harvest at that time. But they're quite short plants about two foot tall,oh it says douce Provence is 18" about the same height.Last edited by Jungle Jane; 28-08-2017, 12:52 PM.Location : Essex
