I am in Hounslow, West London - I think the planes that fly right over our house raise the temperature enough to give us a week or twos head start...

I checked my spud bags today and found a few wee shoots pushing up through the soil - yippee! but they're not as big as urban-garderner's spuds. Should I position my bags in direct sunlight or should they be in the shade. They're in the shade at the moment and maybe that's why they're not doing so well.

                  Advice please!

I have all my spuds in - but my excuse is time is short as my impending marriage approaches and the OH gives me lists after list after list of things that need to be done beforehand.
My earlies are in buckets in the greenhouse - Foremost, Arran Pilot and Charlotte and these are literally (tonight) just beginning to show above the initial compost.
My others are outside in beds, already earthed up - Rooster and British Queen. Also have three BQ in a reclaimed cattle mineral feed drum. PFA still to come

Urban gardener, thanks for the pics. I have my spinach (beet) in the green house, actually not germinated yet. Have grown it outdoors in tubs and growbags before but not put it outdoors at this time of year. Think maybe I coset plants too much. How hardy is it?

Hi Alice, mine is doing well. I always have a few spinach plants going through the winter in my plastic greenhouse for baby leaves then, about the end of march, I put some out in my bed - I have not had any fail before but I have only been doing it for 3 years and we have not had any really bad springs by us in that time. The good thing about getting it out early is that you can avoid the worst slug damage that I always seem to get when I plant later.
