  • Corn Truffles

Found some of our sweetcorn has Corn Smut, also known as corn truffles. It won't win many prizes for its' looks but has a lovely mushroomy sweetcorn flavour and is apparently quite sought after. Once cooked this lot topped toasted open cheese and tomato sandwiches.
I see Cptncrackoff had some last year, anyone else had any.

I think it looks fantastic! I rarely grow sweetcorn because it seems to attract the deer to my garden, I've never seen corn smut or tasted it.

Yes I had it on my Lavender Parching Corn a few years ago when the weather was damp. I didn't welcome it because it spoiled the cobs for seeds and storage, but I was intrigued to find it was edible and a delicacy in some places. It took me a while to persuade myself to eat it, because it doesn't look very appetising. But I did eventually cook and eat a bit, and it tasted fine, and as you can see, I survived to tell the tale.

I always wonder about these packs of unusual mushrooms you find in various shops, i.e. not run of the mill supermarkets.
Are they foraged, could they have some undesirable content ?

New one on me too, no danger of me eating it, not keen on mushroom taste.

Thanks for the picture. Never seen that before. I'd have been terrified if I had. Now at least I'll know what it is. Not sure that I'd ever eat it, mind...

I've had this in Mexico, they call it huitlacoche and eat it in all sorts of things, had no idea it grew in the UK!
