  • 5 gallon tub spacing for chilli plants

    Hi!

Going to start getting the GH ready for next season soon and will be using 5 gallon tubs for a self watering setup. Only really intend on growing chillis... what sort of spacing would they need?
Thought I'd have a back row of taller plants with the shorter ones in front. Won't be able to move the tubs around so wherever they go, that's where they'll stay.

    Cheers

Hmmm, I dunno how big a 5 gallon tub is! What dimensions are they?
What chillies do you intend to grow. Remember that you will need to be able to reach at the back of the row to harvest.

From memory I think they're 12" wide 14" deep. Looking to grow a selection, hopefully at least 1 or 2 types per tub. Would plan to keep the taller growers on the back, I guess I'd have to stagger 2 rows either side along the wall

A standard MFB holds 1.5 gallons (12 pints) when filled to a level about 2 inches below the rim - that's the level I fill them to for tomatoes.
I just did it to see as 5 gallons means nothing to me either!

This MFB is 10" diameter and 10" high.

Well MFBs are the smallest I would go. 12inch wide and 14inch deep doesn't sound any bigger than a MFB. I grow one plant to the biggest pot I can find.

Even bigger buckets can be moved. I wouldn't grow 2 in any pot. Remember that chillies need a long growing season so if you aren't bringing any in during October to finish ripening you need to choose your varieties carefully.

These are good grade, I recall filling with a 25kg bag of topsoil a few months ago. I'll be connecting em all together with a watering system which is why I won't move em once in place

                Just adding - a Builder's bucket is 3 gallon/14 litre.

Hopefully this will give you an idea how much space you need for chillies

I don't know what you mean

Air pot..... I can't really see any advantage if I'm honest. They do have a big drawback, they are a pain in the ar$e to water.
