  • Green Garlic cloves

On the new plot I took on there was some old garlic growing. Having saved the cloves they have taken on a green colour.

    Are these viable if planted?

They look healthy enough to me! And big (elephant garlic perhaps?). Have a look at this:

    Eat or Toss

If this article is right, it doesn't look to be a problem.

I imagine its just the same as chitting potatoes in the light as opposed to the dark i.e. they go green. Once you take the outer skin off the cloves and and the light gets to them they will go green.
I wouldn't eat them but they will probably grow fine.

I'd try eating a couple to see if you like them first.

A lotty neighbour showed me the six packs of ellie garlic he'd bought yesterday. Each pack cost £2.99 and contained just two cloves . Didn't have the heart to tell him we put 60 in last year, he could have had a few if I'd known.

Yep, I was a bit gutted yesterday when I had to pay £2.99 for two Elephant garlic cloves. Hopefully though, it will be a once only purchase as i will eat half and plant half next year!

The green cloves are fine to plant or eat. Unlike spuds they don't go toxic when green so you'll be fine
