  • Autumn Planted Garlic

I have purchased some garlic cloves for autumn planting which I have not done before. I have read online that they are planted in November but can I plant now or should I wait until next month? If I do have to wait until November what part of the month is best for planting?

Location: Devon. Mild weather expected for the next two weeks.

    Best regards,
    Greg

mine have been in a fortnight and just starting to show. I would plant them now but remember they don't like the ground too wet.

if your garlic bed is prone to water logging then plant them on ridges to aid drainage.

I've got mine in as well but if your first frosts are generally not until much later, you can hold off planting if you want to. Aim to get them in at least 6-8 weeks before the first frosts (which in Devon is what, never?!).

        Autumn Planted Garlic

Frosts in Devon are a novelty. I know someone in Cornwall on the north coast where I used to live whose daughter was 14 before she saw her first snow fall.

Mine went in at the beginning of the month and the perky little critters are already well above ground level. As this has happened in the past I shall ignore their demands for attention as I know that as the weather gets colder they will go into hibernation.
