  • Onions and too much rain

    Hi all,

I planted my overwintering onion and shallot sets about 10 days ago, when the weather was supposed to be good for the following week. Of course since then it has rained almost constantly (think there was only 1 dry day in 10). My soil is fairly well draining (and they went in after potatoes, so it was worked quite loose anyway), but there are no shoots popping up as yet.

Am I just impatient and they need more time, or are they likely to rot due to all this rain? Worried now that I've wasted a huge batch of onions!

10 days doesn't seem that long

Thanks guys, it's my first time growing onions (just starting second year on the lottie ) and everybody else is peering over the fence telling me about their several-inch tall onion shoots so I was getting a bit nervous!

Patience it is then (not too good at that!)

Patience!! They need to grow some roots first, before the shoots.
