  • Is this winter ever going to end?
Have had to move all the chillies back inside as its down around 2 degrees the last few nights. Also lost a few of the weaker seedlings to slugs in the few days they were outside. They were that small that they probably weren't going to do much anyway but still hate losing them. Once they go outside full time I'll do regular checks for slugs so they won't do as much damage.

    • Just 9 days since potting up and the plants have come on leaps and bounds.

In the background are the known chilli and sweet pepper plants.

It is now clearer what the characteristics of the plants are. The table is a good indicator for size, but the leaf structure is now coming through.

Have to keep them in smaller pots for a week or so yet as the polytunnel is built.

Do you have a photo of them?
I think my padron peppers have bolted but am trying to work out if it's just the way they look.

Funnily enough I was just about to post a photo of my small collection.

These were all sowed early March:

The ones in black square pots are the Padrons. The smallest ones are Prairie Fire and the rest are Apache.

I might be missing something but what do you mean by bolted? I thought bolted usually referred to when vegetables grown for their leaves started going to seed (e.g. salad crops, brassicas) but surely with peppers we want them to flower and fruit?

If your plants are developing sporadic flowers already it's best to remove them at this stage; either cut or just pinch off with a thumbnail. It's normal to get flowers randomly appear but - and I'm guessing - your plants are probably too under developed to support fruit so it's just wasting energy that would be better used in growing new shoots and getting bigger.

Peppers don’t really bolt? Are they just leggy?

              • Without quoting everyone, I sowed four padron pepper seeds and four jalapeños. The jalapenos are doing well. One of the padron peppers looks similar to the jalapeño plants with slightly paler leaves. The other three look more like weeds. Lots of side branches but no leaves. I'll post a pic up tonight.

All had germinated in a heated, lit propagator and started off well.

                • Photos would help, are you saying all the leaves have dropped?
What have you done with them lately? Fed them, potted on, where are you keeping them, what temps are they in, what size of pot, etc...

                    • If you have checked the forecast and the lowest is 10 they will be ok....but it is 6 here at the moment?
They will need hardening off before you leave them out all night though.

Both plants came from the same pack of padron pepper seeds from moreveg.

                            • Hmm, I think the one that is flowering is a weed, it certainly doesn't look like a chilli to me .....what variety is it supposed to be?

                              • I agree with scarlet. That's not a chilli.
