  • Buying Garlic Online from eBay

My raised beds are finished and ready for things to go in them. I want to out some garlic in now while the ground is still soft, but I can't seem to find any! According to my local garden centre they sold out because some chap on gardeners world did a piece about garlic and then everyone went out and bought it all! Pretty much every shop I can find online is out of stock too.

The only place I can find Solent Wight is on eBay but I'm hesitant about buying from there. Had anyone got any experience of buying garlic from eBay? Are there any issues to be aware of? My garlic this year was a total failure so I want to get off to a good start lol

Everyone has their views, get them from your local supermarket, a local market etc but the best I've had are from the garlic farm.
They always have a stall at our Christmas market....you can buy online here https://www.thegarlicfarm.co.uk/buy/garlic-for-growing

I bought some from Lidel 2015 planted 14 october, grew the bigest cloves in 2016 ,grew well and iv'e planted the bigest clove again this year and they are sticking up nicely ,ive got 42 of the lidel strain and 30 eliphants that originally came from dobies costing £2 a clove ! i aint paying that again.
good luck with your search but if all fails you can stick some lidel or aldi ones in and it aint cost a lot just use the bigest cloves out of the bulbs! atb Dal

Any local farmers markets in your area?
Maybe see if one is selling locally grown garlic that you can utilise. That way you are getting one that you know has and so should grow well in your location.

I picked up a couple of big garlics from Norwich market. Seems to be an option that never gets considered.

If you added a location someone may give suggestions.

I've brought garlic from Premier seeds direct on ebay - but they don't have any for sale, I see. I don't like the look of the others on offer, so I wouldn't buy those.
Other suppliers still have stock, but I suppose the p&p makes them expensive. Postage is usually reasonable at Chase Organics

          Others here also have stock

The possible pitfalls of buying from Ebay are that you could get diseased bulbs, or bulbs that actually aren't the variety you thought and won't grow well in your area. Ebay can be great, but it is basically buying off 'some bloke'. One problem is that the complaints procedure is time limited, which is OK for most the stuff sold on there, 'cos it's either is what the seller said or it isn't, but it's useless for most seeds and bulbs as by the time you found out you were sold a dud, it's too late to lodge a complaint or get a refund.

There are great sellers on there, there are also people selling seeds for rainbow roses If you do decide to try it, check the location of the seller (make sure they are UK based if you want UK varieties), and take a quick look through the rest of their shop and check if anything seems suspect. If they're selling stuff that makes you think 'Hang on, is that real?' don't buy from them.

If you decide to try shop bought garlic, which I generally do, avoid any from China as I have found that generally any from there are sprayed with a growth inhibitor
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.
