  • Oooooh, nice Christmas present!!!

Nearly 4 years ago (Jan 2014) I applied for an allotment. I was told there was a waiting list of about 20 and there were only 20 allotments, which became free on average once a year. I added my name to the list and expected nothing.

This afternoon there was a knock at the door and a man I had never seen before asked for me. He was from the parish council and said an allotment has become available and I am now top of the list.

    It gets better.

The allotments start at the bus stop about 5 minutes walk from my house and there are several sections of them for the next half mile or so along the main street. There is one particular allotment which is the nearest one to me and has a big hooped tunnel covered in green debris netting. There is also a shed on the site. Every time I walk past (including this morning) I gaze longingly at it.

The available allotment is the one with the green mesh tunnel . The current holder is elderly and has had a fall, so he can't look after it any more.

I can be shown round it at the beginning of January, but I couldn't resist going and having another look over the fence at it straight away.

    Please don't wake me up!!!

My only reservation is do I have the time to look after it along with my own garden and my friend's veg plot, but I think I can find the time. If I can't manage then I can always give it up. Some of what I want to grow will mostly look after itself once its planted anyway - things like rhubarb and fruit bushes.

The neighbouring plot is immaculate, so I'd better keep it tidy or I'll be in trouble!

Congratulations, Penellype. That is a tremendous present. Very pleased for you, though sorry for the elderly man who had it before. You must be so excited. Time to get your plans out again and expand them.

Hope you have a lovely Christmas.

You'll be able to rethink your own garden a bit. Less moving of pots around and squeezing things in. Room to grow - and of course you can manage it.

Congratulations Penellype, I am quite sure you will cope, I really enjoy reading your posts and had hopes that it would be about my garden you were posting about in the future, but this good news for you put the hems on it that, enjoy your allotment
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

I will certainly enjoy planning what I am going to put where, and it will relieve my garden of things that take up a lot of space and don't need daily attention, like onions, broccoli and the gooseberry and blackcurrant bushes for starters.

We'll see - I may do a separate thread so I don't take over completely!
