    Planted onion sets, cabbage, cauliflower and sprouts in greenhouse under a paraffin heater during evening/night. Nothing showing yet, going to plant peas in guttering and leeks over the next few days. Chillies on window sill at home.

      Today I sowed some small pots: Cauliflower "Candid Charm", Lettuce "Mixed Green Leaves" and Mizuna. I'm also chitting some peas "Early Onward" and parsnip "Tender and True" on kitchen roll in plastic bags on my desk. Once they germinate I'll sow them straight into my garden.

          Due to the weather my plan to create my new potting space down the side of the garage has been on hold (thread: https://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gr...ead_95911.html) but hoping to get started on it soon.

          In the meantime I've finally ordered some seeds. I've ordered pretty much everything I need with a few exceptions. I still need to order some seed potatoes, cucumber and spring onions. I've ordered everything else this year from SowSeeds. Hoping to get onto some of these this week for indoor sowing (tomatoes and chillies the priority). What I've bought for my two SFG raised beds:

          * Tomato - Gardener's Delight
          * Salad Crops - Perpetual Spinach, Salad Rocket, Lettuce "All Year Round", Lettuce "Red Salad Bowl"
          * Parsnip - Gladiator F1
          * Carrot - Early Nantes 2
          * Radish - Cherry Belle (mainly got these for intercropping)
          * Leek - Musselburgh
          * Swiss Chard - "Bright Lights"
          * Chillies - Apache F1, Prairie Fire and Padron
          * French Beans - Stanley (dwarf variety)
          * Herbs and companion plants - Summer Savoury, Calendula

          We'll also be setting up a little raised herb garden near the kitchen window but I'll probably start this off with plug plants or ready-grown pots.

          I had planned to try some sweet peppers but decided without a greenhouse it probably wasn't worth it, so I thought I'd try the Padron instead. It should fit within a square foot fine but it might be a bit tall, hopefully it won't overshadow the onions on the shaded side of them (I think the onions should be harvested by the time the plant gets tall enough).

            Going up to B and Q this coming saturday with a friend of mine so we can both grab a bag of the verve compost (125 litres for £6.93) so i can hopefully start sowing some seeds in the coming weeks.

              Actually went down the plot for more than just emptying the kitchen compost. It's been so muddy, I've not dared do anything more than that for months.

              Looks like my broad beans survived the snow virtually unscathed, unlike almost all the others on site. Raked a few beds level, sowed some more beans to keep the existing ones company and sowed some parsnip seeds.

              Maybe a little optimistic, but's starting to warm up a bit here, 12°C forecast for the weekend!

                Mine too!! I was worried they would have frozen on me as we got a good covering in London. But, they're OK. Did you sow your directly into the ground?
                I've got some on the go on my windowsill, now getting about a foot tall and I've noticed the leaves have slightly curled... does anyone know why this could be? Not enough light? Will it be better to harden them off and plant out?

                Ive also sown some chili seeds.. a first for me this year.
                pea meteor, spinach and sunflowers.

                  Not many of mine did - but we've had several nights (over the winter, not just recently) down to-5 or lower, and quite a few spells of very strong wind. One bed was also pretty well killed off by the sparrows eating them. I'm not too bothered, most of them went in to help condition the new beds. My original thinking was that if I get any crop off them it'll be a bonus.

                  Yesterday I sowed some more beans, these being ones definitely aimed at harvesting, and planted out all my fibre pots of peas. I got a much better germination rate that I did from direct sowing last year. The earliest ones have been up for a fortnight now, some heading for nearly 5" high and quite a few roots poking out of the pots, so into the bed they went - with a little fleece tent just in case we get any frosts before they've acclimatised. They should be happy enough though, they've spent ten days in my unheated porch and, when I measured it, the soil temperature is roughly what they've been used to.

                  I also installed the dripper hoses for my irrigation system yesterday and, today, added the feed to them from my water butts. Last year I used soaker hoses off the mains but now I have some 8-900 litres of water butt capacity, plus a bank of dustbins for storing the excess so that should cut my water bills this year - as well as not feeding the veggies chlorinated water.

                  Most of my other sowings (mainly flowers) are nearly ready to come out of the light tent so I should be able to sow my greenhouse crops over the weekend - tomatoes, cucumbers, aubergines and melons.

                    I sowed some pots today:
                    - Tomatoes (Shirley, Piccolo, Sungold, Rosella)
                    - Cabbages (Goldan Acre, Nantais Hatif)
                    - Beetroot (Sanguina)
                    - Nasturtium (Salad Mix).

                    The beetroot is a bit of an experiment, I've only ever sown direct before. I'll probably hedge my bets and sow some outside next month.

                      Today I sowed some Spring onions and some cosmos, and put a couple of trays of compost into the heated propagator to warm up for my tomato sowings tomorrow.
                      Also sowed some seeds I collected from a pod I took off a giant ornamental grass plant last Autumn - no idea if they'll germinate!

                          It may be different at your B&Q, but from the one here I find it dries out very quickly so would watch that if seeds in a warm drying place
