  • It was a fairly nice day so I finally got around to some seed sowing. I sowed some Californian peppers and jalapeño peppers, Italian kale, curly kale, rainbow chard, minicole cabbage, avalanche cauliflower, Evesham Brussels, broccoli, purple sprouting broccoli, celeriac and a bunch of Kelvedon wonder peas for the shoots.

Chill out 1Bee, I've sown nothing too, except a few flower seeds. I look at my windowsills and think, well this is nice, no leggy overgrown veg seedlings that I can't put out 'cos it's too cold, and can't pot on 'cos I'm out of room.

I shall start sowing in April, so that as soon as seeds pop up their heads, they can go outside under a cloche to grow strong and straight. They'll catch up just fine. Folk have been growing veg by sowing them outdoors when the weather was right for centuries, it's only the modern world's need for haste, and our desire to grow exotics that tempts us to start earlier and earlier.

      Endless wonder.

      • My dahliad seeds have started to germinate already.
Sown less than a week ago.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

I got my compost this morning from B&Q and hadn't planned on having a massive sowing session, but...

I took the bag of compost outside and into 1 of my growhouses. When i unzipped the growhouse i felt the heat from inside and had an immediate thought that I needed to sow something in there.

So I ended up sowing my Onions, Sprouts, Cabbages, Turnips and Swedes. I know it's going to turn cold again next week but when i felt the heat of the sun on my neck and head, and also felt the heat coming out of my growhouse, I just couldn't help myself.

At the end of the day, if nothing germinates, I can always sow again in 2 or 3 weeks time.

                  • With the Beast from the East3 due next week I decided I would wait till it's gone before sowing seeds...............yeh right, no patience at all. I bought a wee window sill propagator, unheated and I've just planted PSB, Romanesco, Golden Acre Primo cabbage and some Leeks and put it in the blowaway inside the greenhouse. Looks like some early Radish are growing in the greenhouse border too.

Knew there was something else i forgot to plant the other day, my purple sprouting broccoli. I will have to do that on Friday when I'm off.
