  • HUGE parsnip!

While at my friend's this morning I decided to dig a parsnip for tea. I started digging and this is what came up:

I just weighed it and it weighs in at just over 2lb 8oz. There is a bit of canker on one side, but nevertheless I think I will have to make some soup as there is no way I can eat that in one go!

I think a mulch consisting of some of the remains of the previous year's hotbed made from fresh horse manure had a lot to do with this.

There are more, if I dare dig them up!

Like most huge veg, when I got inside it I found it had a crack down the centre and therefore some of it was not edible. However I still have a large pan of pieces currently cooking for soup

On the downside, I went to harvest a turnip and found that it really hasn't liked being frozen, although it looked ok on the outside. It was an unappetizing looking grey colour inside and to add insult to injury, was also infested with cabbage root fly, despite having been netted.

Not bad, but this one is over 4lbs (1.9kg). Did Christmas lunch for the family all by itself(with plenty to spare!)
