  • I've spent most of my day so far cleaning up indoors. The biggest mess was my gardening stuff in the dining room (including my potting station - aka the floor - that's probably not needed now the weather is nice enough to do it outside) and it definitely needed doing. Everything is looking much better now (but there's still plenty of cleaning to do...)

I've just nipped outside and used a little Black & Decker hand trimmer to cut all the grass at the edges of my lawn that my mower can't get to. So, now I have lots of grass that hasn't had mosskiller near it that I can use to earth of my potatoes a bit more. It may be a bit late as most of them are close to the tops of their bags, but it will save me some compost (running low again, despite my parents sending me two 125L bags a few weeks ago).

Lots of sowing I should be doing today, but I am definitely losing oomph. I am going to go out and do some feeding and watering and then see how much energy I have left after that.

    • Collected a trug of docks
Tied the blackberries to the fence in my "edible" hedge.
      .........and the Wineberries
      .........and the Worcesterberries
      ..........and the Jostaberries
Tied the raspberries to their wires.
      Chatted to the tadpoles
      Nipped out my armpits
      Picked 2 cucumbers
Found some ripening strawberries - just a few more days and they will be no more.
      Watered the GHs
Shuffled the seedlings in propagators around and moved some into GH
Went to the supermarket and bought a dozen packets of sandwiches for 8p each. Gave the meat to the dogs and the bread to the chooks. Ate some myself and gave away some packets to friends.
      Are you bored yet?

        • Planted out some lily-of-the-valley and some Veronica I was given by a customer. Have been tidying up in veg plot, emptying and corralling pots, tidying canes etc. Might just have time to pot on some squash plants.....

          • Not so much " what I did today " but what I did this week.
With so much going on in the family, visitors, family coming to stay, upcoming holidays etc, I made a huge effort to get as much as possible done in the past week.
I made two fruit cages for my two big gooseberry bushes. ( I no longer have a cat to keep the birds away )
Made and constructed a poly tunnel to cover the brassicas.
Planted out 24 Dahlias I grew from seed.
            Staked up my Sweet peas.
            Staked and supported my tomatoes.
Fed and watered everything in the greenhouse.
Planted out my beetroot and corn.
            Earthed up the potatoes.
Planted out the spring onions and lettuce.
Lots of other bits and pieces.
Now having a day off today.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

              • ^^^Love those cane toppers- so much more stylish than plastic bottles!

I spent the day moving my ‘tall’ brassicas cage. After digging the vertical posts out of the ground, I decided that they really didn’t need to be hammered 2 feet down..... Should be much easier to move next year!

                  • Gave away a cucumber plant to my sister. Raked out and then sowed a new lawn at my sons cottage. Planted runner beans, dwarf french beans and ridged up first earlies on the plot.
Spent too much time trying to gerry rig a hose at the cottage to water the new lawn seed (and had a few "xnhm;h4e#li%a" moments as the water system under the sink started leaking where it shouldn't!
All fixed now. A very busy weekend between to busy work weeks, but it felt god anyway.

                    • Not much again today. Weather is horrible, will be lighting the fire soon.
                      Weeded tunnel bed.
Cut a big trug full of nettles. Stuffed them into a carrot bag, chucked it into the liquid feed bin.

                          • Went to the plot in my lunch break and found that the solar fountain I installed in my small pond had happily pumped half the water out of it! Refilled it with the hose, which isn't ideal, but we don't seem to be having our usual quota of rain at the moment... not that I'm complaining!
Potted on a courgette that was potbound, sowed a row of beetroot, and 12 dwarf French beans in modules.
                            Watered a few potted things.

                            • Potted out some plugs that arrived in the post today, planted out a few more leeks, thinned the parsnips (I sow three per station to be sure I should get at least one), topped up the water butts from the reserve bins, rigged up a Y-connection for two of the butts to the manifold to free up one tap-controlled outlet for filling watering cans (because I've found that turning a butt off and its feed to the manifold so I can disconnect the hose to fill a can sometimes leads to an airlock in the balancing hose between the banks of butts so they don't balance out) and had a little furtle in one of my first early spuds tubs - now going to pick a few mint leaves to chop up and have with the spuds that the furtling provided ;-)
