  • Well, just in time for the bank holiday I've done my ankle in - took me 45 mins to hobble from the car to the office yesterday during a torrential downpour... anyway that means even less digging than usual. So I took the strimmer I'd been gifted last weekend apart - didn't have to strip it too far as it seem that the problem was with the fuel primer and the first thin sheet from the carb - not sure what that's called. anyhow, cleaned one bit up and replaced the pump - managed to get the strimmer to run for about 30 seconds at a time - so I guess its just a case of sorting the fuel mix... fingers crossed. Hobbling back to the car got intercepted bu a lady from the committee, so despite my elephant-man ankle I helped her sort her water butt capture system out - in return she's going to donate a few cans of beer... I tried to say no, just not too loudly
Chillis at home are generally doing well, but the ones most exposed to sun have taken a bit of a battering this week. Watered tehm and most have responded but I've probably lost three or four that were about 4 or 5 inches high an doing well ;(
Working away means there isn't a great deal I can do about things like that until after the event - so tomorrow they will get moved to lower shelving and will then most likely get devoured by slugs. oh well...

      • Put canes in toms and pinched out armpits. Sowed huauazontle, orach, purslane, two types of lettuce, more nasturtiums, two types of spring onions something else but I've forgotten what. Good job I labeled it all!
        Another happy Nutter...

          • Yesterday I sowed a row of carrots, Sweet Candle and planted 4 tomatoes, Mountain Magic out in the garden. The beetroot Crapaudine that I sowed on 22nd are now through. Earthed up my main crop spuds on the allotment and dug over an area for my squashes. Noticed one onion with a withered top and after opening one of the leaves found a little white caterpillar inside. Where's that sprayer?

            • I've had a big (and very overdue) potting on session:

A few chillies, peppers, aubergines and physalis (the rest are getting given away as I just don't have the space), then lots and lots of strawberries and three tiger nuts.

I've also "earthed up" my potato plants with some dried grass.

I probably have a bit more potting on to do this afternoon, then I'll need to assess my compost situation and see if I have enough to sow some more seeds for succession growing (lots due to go in today, but I'll struggle with the amount of compost I have left. It's currently clouded over, so I could try a walk to the supermarket to see if they have any bags of compost light enough for me to carry home with me. I should have gone after dark yesterday when it was cooler...)

              • Yesterday made a cut flower raised bed. Still to be filled and my seedlings are still growing.

                • Bit of a disappointing day in the veg garden.

The chillies in my raised beds are looking a bit scorched on a few leaves. However I do remember this happening with my outdoor chilli plants last year and it looked like they had stopped growing for ages before they suddenly took off in late June.

One of my rocket plants has turned purple. Any idea what causes this? The three others in the same square in my raised bed look fine.

Another one of my perpetual spinach had died so I removed it and sowed a replacement. Not sure if the stem had rotted or something else. I also had to remove several leaves from others including my Swiss chard due to beet leaf miner. I had this problem with Swiss chard last year. I need to be vigilant and regularly check the leaves for eggs while they are still young.

Picked a couple of broad bean pods which looked big and fat only to find a three disappointingly small beans inside each one. I guess they need a bit longer.

My radishes still aren’t done. I was led to believe they would be ready in 30 days. I’d say they’ve been in the beds for nearly two months and most of them are only small. I picked one which looked ready to harvest only to find something else had eaten holes in it!

To top it off I killed my fourth frog of the year, this time with the strimmer. A smallish one hiding away in the grass near the fence. I managed to find all the bits. Gross.

                  • -levelled and raked over all of my allotment beds(except for areas under tarpaulins cover, that's for another day)
-weeded left and front boundary of allotment
-removed two massive brambles and roots, easier after the rain
-made some temporary paths with my feet between beds
-bottled some elderflower cordial which I collected and made yesterday, left to stew 24 hours

                      • Put the netting back on the brassica cage after moving the frame last week, weeded the inside, and planted 16 cauliflowers inside it.
Hopefully kale should be big enough to join them in a couple of weeks

                        • Wow that's some transformation scarlet!

Today I've Potted on more chillies.
                          Planted out beetroot & watercress
Took some stuff to the honesty shop
Changed some of the stock in the barrow.
Planted out 5 pots of mixed wildflowers ( doubt they'll last long, no deer or bunny proofing where I planted them )
Watered other half of the garden
                          Sown seeds.
