  • Emptied a dalek onto my empty pea bed, and put some were I'd removed courgette plants from. Took more leaves from my GH toms and weeded the borders. Pulled out poles beans now they've all been harvested.
    Location....East Midlands.

    • oh - and ate a rather delicious sweetcorn 'in-situ' - I planted them late and haven't had lots but they've been fully pollinated and sweet as a nut

(by in-situ I mean on the plot, straight from plant to gob, with only a mild bit of peeling be'twixt the two, its not a new F1 variety)

      • Managed to nip down for an hour or so this evening. Such a lovely evening too.

Harvested calabrese and courgettes. Had calabrese for dinner and know why it's worth growing them even if it's only 50p in the supermarket - the taste is amazing.

Dug a small patch where the tomatoes and borlotti were. Ready for garlic!!

        Checked brassica netting.

        • @Jay-ell another way to freeze sweetcorn, if you have the space, is to just bag them up as they are in your first picture without doing anything apart from trimming them a bit. They cook well in an oven then still on the cob, 35 min. if still frozen on 20 if thawed out first.

          • A good, satisfyingly busy weekend.

Saturday, cleared out the backyard and put it to bed for winter. Harvested all the rest of the tomatoes and put them to ripen on a windowsill. Cleared out the growhouse and troughs of their toms, cucs and one pepper and chopped up for compost down the plot. Took 3 bags of compost down to the plot. Pruned the pepper and brought it inside for winter. Weeded, strimmed the small 'lawn' which rather got away from us, stacked away the chairs etc and swept all the flags. Tidied the corner which is my potting up corner in spring, and the log pile all the rest of the year.... Packed away pots, feed, spare compost etc into the growhouse. Watched the kitten run wall of death loops of the backyard chasing moss, leaves, the wind, imaginary friends...

Sunday, three hours or so of hard work on the plot. Took the net almost completely off the brassica tunnel and winched (not literally) three sprouts back into an upright position. Staked them and three others that looked vulnerable. Usually they manage without stakes in the tunnel, but last week's storm did the business. Weeded, firmed in, earthed up the stems, fed and de-slugged. Put the net back, making secure. Hopefully they'll recover, as apart from nearly falling over they're looking good.

Took down the hazel poles and stacked them off the ground to help prevent them rotting. They're precious to me! Had a good look at the layout of the plot and started planning a sneaky willow arch.

Dug up another bucket of potatoes. Mowed a path. Tied up some raspberries. Picked some flowers and two sneaky courgettes. Turned the compost heap (again) and played alchemy with compostables.

            • Today I've been piling up the compost heap adding in the corn cobs, husks, stalks, grass cuttings and bokashi.

Harvested more raspberries. I think that's the last of the raspberries and I'll cut the canes down the next visit. It's not that they're no more raspberries - it's just the profanities every time my mother sees more raspberries . we've had quite a few of them this year.

Cleared out the last of the cucumbers. Got the last few crystal lemons but the regular cucumbers had gave up the ghost so both plants went on the compost pile. The two plants have given quite a few cucumbers so I'm happy with them. Usually I had them in the greenhouse growing up a trellis but this year they were outside sprawling over a bed.

Picked chard, chard, chard and chard/ After a couple of kilograms I stopped harvesting - they're growing quickly, it's hard to eat up with them.

Beans aren't looking too hot. The Blue Lake has some nice looking pods starting to dry and the Lazy Housewife has some as well, but the Botlotti hardly have a bean in the pods and I'm not sure that they'll bulk up by the time the plant.

Pumpkins are still hanging in there and going nice and orange now.

                        • Compost Fairy dropped off 5 big bags of grass. When my back was turned he dropped off another bag.

Took it down to the plot where I got on with using it to mulch the beds - meanwhile my mother happily set to the raspberries with the secateurs.

I pruned of the Autumn raspberry canes and also the old canes of the blackberries. Tied in the new blackberry canes.

Filled 4 of the garden bags with the prunings, took them home and shredded them into 2 IKEA blue bags.

                          • Took the shreddings and a bag of bokashi down to the plot and added them to the compost pile.

Fixed the glazing back into the greenhouse.

There's been a touch of frost on some of the plants and they're starting to die back - especially the giant pumpkins. Cut the two Giant Pumpkins off the vines and stuck the vines in the compost - one day they're covering half the plot and then suddenly there's very little to them.

The Jenny Kiwi vine also has crispy leaves and the beans are all but naked. There's touches of frost damage on the sweet potatoes so they'll probably be up soon but the oca is still going strong and untouched - but who knows by next week it could be flopped over on the ground.

Popped the pumpkins into the greenhouse to wait for the weigh in for the competition. Don't know how heavy they are but I nearly done my back in - twice.

                            • Started digging another bed but only got 1/4 through.
Harvested 1 cucumber, 2 courgettes, a beetroot, lettuce, a few stem calabrese and dried giant beans and borlotti.
Raked new garlic bed and planted 25 cloves. More to be planted once beds become free.

                              • Pulled up the Summer Crookneck and Honeyboat Squash vines and put the squash on the table to harden off. They're still there!
                                Picked another 5 courgettes.
                                Emptied some pots of potatoes.
                                Chatted to the chooks.
Collected Echinacea seed heads and put them in the GH to finish drying.
