  • Not much time for garden today...
Was out walking the dog and enjoying lovely autumn sunshine when I spotted two v large pots lying beside a public bin. The bottoms had been cut out and other pots attached to make two flowerpot men. It helped that the names Bill and Ben were painted on the sides.
Well you can guess bill and Ben soon found their way to my garden.
I’ve put them down and three quarters filled with a mix of leafmould, coffee grounds and home made compost. I’m going to see if I can grow some spuds in them next year. I might use some of my own potatoes as seed potatoes.
That way whatever I get out of it would be completely free.
I think I am turning into a womble.

Gave the chilli tunnel a little tidy up.

      • Not much done today. Looked sadly at garlic bed which hasn't sprouted, only one out of 25.
Very little to harvest now - calabrese sprouts, kale. Very pleased I planted kale as we are getting a few meals every week from it.
Ordered new garlic in resignation. If after a month they haven't sprouted they must have rot or been eaten :

        • Our local supermarket were giving away free pumpkins today - said I could take as many as I liked, and even offered to help me carry them to the car.
That has more than made up for my home grown ones not doing so well this year

          • Harvested and cut down another 4 chillies.
            Made chilli sauce
More chillies in and out of the dehydrator.
            Collected chilli seeds for drying.

            • Got out at the plot today. Put overwintering onions and shallots in a bed I cleared a week ago (pumpkin patch). Sowed Douce Provence peas and some broad beans in another clear bed. Then realised I didn't have space for the garlic Tidied up the bed that currently has oregano in it and sowed the garlic around the oregano. 3 x elephant garlics next to the oregano and 36 garlic cloves in the space I cleared from the sweet peas and sunflower tower.

Bought a couple of cans of beer on the way back, off to cook the spoils....

              • Fixed up a couple of raspberry supports, dug over a 4’x8’ patch of new ground on the plot, picked a handful of sprouts, and am now making 4 different kinds of pumpkin soup

                • Picked up 8 bags of free gravel, dropped them off at the plot. Made a start on the Autumn clear up, the heavy frost last week killed a lot of the flowers, which now look awful. Just one giant cosmos plant took ages to snip into small enough bits to get it in the compost bin, and there's at least a dozen of them

                  • a good weekend of pottering
took down the rest of the bean canes, harvested parsnips and swiss chard. took a couple of green bins down to the plot (one of them had a lot of ivy in, not sure if that will rot down or not). planted experimental potatoes, and had a fire to dispose of some weeds and some rotten bits of shed. Also to introduce the small person to marshmellow toasting (he didn't like it). This was double-annoying as I stopped putting on smokey greens and built up a nice bank of hot embers for toasting... small people eh?

in the garden - mowed the lawns. I took a rose cutting from the rose I successfully got a cutting from earlier in the year, and pruned it. Emptied the growbags from the greenhouse and some spent compost from some tubs into the veg bed. Pulled up all the bulbs/tubers/etc that grew successfully this year and they are drying in the garage

                    • Dug up the second cropping spuds, planted the broad beans, planted the potatoes for next year.

                      • Chopped my asparagus ferns down to a couple of inches above ground. Did a quick weed of the bed but there wasn’t much to do. Scattered some chicken manure pellets over the crowns, I’ll put a layer of home made compost down over that, and maybe some seaweed if I get a chance to gather some.
Composted a couple more dead cosmos.

                        • Measured up for phase 2 of terraced beds. Very slippery on wet clay slope, so had to abandon all ideas of digging out a tree stump and some more carpet! Bit of weeding, and mulched one of last year’s raised beds, then home for a hot shower before a remembrance concert this evening ;-)

                          • Picked up another 5 bags of gravel today, and 5 yesterday... i now have enough gravel to complete my project!
Pricked out some Spring greens seedlings to overwinter in the poly tunnel. Dug up the last of the dahlia corms to store till Spring. Cleared the central concrete path - I hate that job, so physical and that horrendous scraping noise! Always feels so good to have it done though, and less chance of coming a cropper on slimy rotten leaves, moss and mud.
Composted a few more dead cosmos and calendula.

                            • Collected 4 barrows of leaves to make leafmould, started tidying up the parking area, then once the ground had dried out a bit, some digging /carpet removal. Tree stump will have to wait til next weekend ;-)

                              • Found an endless supply of horse manure

Only downside is the need to bag it as I don’t have a trailer ☹️
