  • Built the last raised/terraced bed for this winter.

Almost filled it with soil, but still a bit more to do before I start planting stuff tomorrow - done, and sown some peas and mangetout

    • Sown peas and dwarf beans. Strimmed a lot of edges. Replaced some guttering on the plot GH with some square stuff that was a better fit. Screwed someones cast-off planter into my fence - have to decide what to put in it - strawbs I expect. Finished adding compost to the 3rd raised bed. Watered plot GH plants.
Have to do the weekly shop i a bit nut hopefully can get back to the plot a little later...

      • I’ve planted some root ginger first time I’ve tried to grow this do see how it goes....
Potted up tomato and cuecumber plants
Started a couple more courgettes as only 4 of the original seeds germinate
Heading in too cold outside today

Mine took weeks to do anything (most of that time in a heated propagator), so don't get disheartened if it takes a while. Unlike my pineapple attempts, the ginger doesn't seem to start rotting. I'd recommend burying it a little more shallowly than most online sources suggest though.

          Today, I have:
Pinched out my sweetpeas and put the pinched out shoots in some water in the hope they may root (free double sweetpeas? Worth a try!)
Moved some plants outside for some tough love (I want to plant my sweetpeas out next weekend)
Sowed some more beetroot and radishes
Spilled beetroot seeds all over the place (blooming wind) and failed miserably at picking them all back up
Fed my worms and fished the explorers out of the sump

I'm going to sow my scorzonera now, in a woefully too short container because it's all I have. Then, I really need to shift my focus to my housework!

          • Back to the plot with a couple of bags of compostables and some French beans in modules - will plant them out at lunchtime tomorrow with luck. Some chillies potted on - some brought back to the kitchen windowsill to see if some more warmth will give them a kick up the jacksy.

            • Lifting an old flower bed and preparing it for the new strawberry bed, transplanted some of the flowers, they have two chances. Cool breeze though mostly dry

                • I've done lots of pottering around today.
Chillies had another day in the tunnel.
Uncovered the sales barrow and removed old signs and wrote new one.
And removing cement from slabs with this great toy

Put slabs in place. Still need to level them.

                  • Cleared the backyard of roofing debris, including digging out the old lawn. Topped up with topsoil and sowed new grass. Emptied troughs of spent mpc and bought more.

On the plot, planted out sweet peas and second lot of broad beans. Cut up some timber for raised beds, earthed up the sarpos and weeded and mulched raspberries.

                      • Technically yesterday but potted up peppers into larger pots, pricked out broccoli and cauliflower into larger pots. Not sure what to do with the mangetout - they're about 4-5 inches tall and already tangling themselves into each other. Not sure if I should use a wooden skewer as a stake until I can get the netting ready for the beds.

                        • Dug over a small patch of the nearly-last-bed-to-need digging. Hurt. Think I may be overdoing it...

                          • Another busy day at the allotment. First job was to fit some fine mesh to a frame to protect my carrots from carrot fly.

After that I planted out 14 asparagus plants.
