What I did today 2018

After my half hearted attempt at saving my pot grown spuds with a windbreak (plants were 3ft high) wasn't as successful as I'd hoped... Spent an hour this morning putting 4 sticks in each pot down the sides and securing with string, I have to say by this evening they had 'mostly' uprighted themselves .
Also didn't secure the mangetout with 'stout' enough canes as they were all at 45degrees this morning so spent another hour trying to push canes into the ground and lots of string was involved .. They are now 'mostly' well nearly upright again.

Even my 3" high brassicas in the second net tunnel were leaning rather awkwardly so yet another hour was spent 'faffing' under net.

Potted on the 2 courgettes from 10lit pots to 30 lit pots as they were struggling.

Planted 60 leeks into the ground with added 'grub'

Cooed at my melons, 8 so far on the Collective farm woman ones and 2 on the sugarbaby watermelons.

Come on Sun I need melons in my life

Had to go into work for a few hours so only managed to get to allotment after 2pm.....to find my precious beans trashed by Hector The back fence on the plot had been blown over and crushed all my babies!!! I knew it was supposed to be bad yesterday so, on Wednesday, deliberately didn't put up the bean frames and plant beans into the ground....only to still lose them!!!!

Felt quite deflated for a while then thought ''what the heck'' and have sowed some more! I may get a crop before the end of summer, I may not....but I gotta try

Strung some string up in the greenhouse to support the peppers, brushed off more aphids, it's a daily battle with the ants now and did a bit of watering

Fed chillies, tomatoes, cucumbers, melons, aubergines and Jeremy ( the Tromboncino).
Put more neem oil on chillies to sort out those little green **its.
Sown seeds.
Harvested stuff.
Potted up mint.
Pollinated some chillies

Planted out nearly all of the seedling beans/squashes/cucumbers from the GH. Just a few Luffas to find a home for. (I blame you SP).
Tied in the toms and cues, did a bit of weeding, picked strawberries and the first raspberry,
Chatted to the tadpoles who are still legless,
Rescued a Great tit from the GH.
Generally mooched around the garden, just looking.

More chilli pollinating.
Tied string round potentially successful pollinated chillies.
Bagged some new chilli varieties for pollinating.
Planted some more radishes.

Planted a cucumber to replace the french bean plant that had died. Replaced 3 dahlias as didn't like the colors. Watered and filled the water buts. Squashed a few aphids that I'd found on the Chillis.

Strimmed the overgrown parts of the plot. Pulled up most of the 6’ high flowering chard monsters. Cut the comfrey jungle down, I’ll make it into tea when I get a chance. Potted the last three chillies into their final pots. Then the heavens opened, hooray!

On Friday I picked up a petrol strimmer I bought on ebay that needs a petrol line.
I'm trying to have a no plastic month, (mostly impossible I'd say as everything comes in plastic containers) Homebase are selling terracotta pots very cheaply 60p and £1 for the sizes I wanted. Whilst there I rescued some bedraggled petunias, marguerite and a pieris at 50p each. I saved about £10 on marked prices, after planting and watering they are perking up and all look fine.
Why on earth do I feel sorry for withered plants and want to make them better?

I do that

Fed indoor hydroponic garden.
Pollinated chillies.
Planted a few spare things in the old turkey run ( turkeys only in there when very young and when the field is getting cut. They free range the rest of the time before they go in the freezer). 2 varieties of sprouts (3 plants), 6 chard, 4 spinach, 3 sweet corn, 10 swede, 8 romanesco, 4 cabbage, 4 kale, 2 varieties of pumpkin, 5 varieties squash, 1 Tromboncino, 3 varieties melon, 1 cucamelon, 1 tomato & 1 sunflower.
Not expecting them to last long. Think the mice are going to get full bellies!

Randomly browsed tinternet - came across a site (url instantly forgotten) about potassium promoting drought tolerance in hydroponic plants.

If your hydroponic system needs the plants to be drought tolerant doesn't that mean that it's busted?

I planted some Jersey royals that I bought the other day into three old buckets (yes, I really am resorting to buckets now!) that I'm planning to cover with seaweed that I'm collecting at the weekend. I believe that's what they used to do on Jersey, but that's now a banned practice.
I'm doing two buckets with seaweed and one without, to compare the taste to see if it's any different!

Pulled out 4 sackfuls of weeds, replaced a couple of panes in the GH, broke another one, and tested a broad bean pod - still a little small for picking but won’t be long

The last few days we've been catching up with all the rain we haven't had. Have had to rescue a few drowning plants instead of having to water thirsty ones.

Potted up some plants - herbs and flowers. Did a tiny bit of weeding.

Washed pots all ready to see some new seeds that arrived last week, love a sale.

Mowed back and front, put some string up in the greenhouse in preparation to tie the chillis & peppers to.

Had a good find of a load of wood that had been thrown out of a local restaurant doing a renovation, you should never pass on the opportunity to stock up on wood
