  • Started off the day shredding the raspberry canes so that they'll compost down quicker.

Decided that I'll pop down to the plot later on in the afternoon when it's a bit cooler as it was pretty warm.

Remember that I said that because of the lack of rain there were no grass cuttings to mulch with so I bought a bale of straw?

Well the Compost Fairy dropped off eight bags of grass clippings. Not that I'm complaining. But not going down earlier meant that I could take them down today.

As I still had several bags of manure to move to the manure bay as well as these eight bags plus the two bags of shreddings from this morning, a bag of kitchen trimmings and a bokashi bucket in addition to a few bags of other stuff on the plot to empty todays activities consisted of a lot of hauling stuff about.

Barrowed the manure and shredding bags to the Heart of Darkness and topped up the compost and manure bins.

As I was emptying the bags that had been sitting on the plot I noticed that one of them had what looked like yacon rhizomes which, despite spending a couple of months sitting unwatered in the hot, dry sun, were putting up shoots and trying their best to grow so I popped them into a space in one of the beds.

Mulched more of the beds. I've about 3 beds left to mulch and 2 bags of grass so it's come in handy.

Curiously I've 2 brassica beds planted at the same time - 1 mulched with grass when planted and 1 unmulched. The mulched one has no slug damage whilst the unmulched one has been feasted on by the slimy so and so's.

    Hypothesis number 1
    - whilst slug a eats brassicas they also eat dead and decaying plant matter. The unmulched bed had no decaying plant matter so the slugs went straight to the plants however the mulched bed had plenty of dead and decaying grass to distract them first.

Hypothesis number 2 - the mulched bed retained water better so the plants there were less stressed. The unmulched bed was open to the drying sun so these plants became stressed and the stressed plants were more attractive to the slugs.

    Hypothesis number 3
    - the mulched bed provides a better environment for slug predators such as centipedes.

    Hypothesis number 4
    - slugs actually don't like moving through mulch.

    Hypothesis number 5
    - just plain lucky, but don't worry they'll be along soon.

As the sun dipped behind the trees lighting the sky with a warm orange glow, the air resonating with the calls of the parakeets and the rustle of the breeze through the bamboo, I stood there watering the manure pile thinking that it didn't stink that bad.

Decided to go home when it started to rain. That lasted long enough for me to feel one drop.

Compost Fairy had been. This time he cut through my tyre with a grinder.

    • Not been doing much exciting, weeding etc. Funny how I get less done in the school holidays, even though DH is off too

Today reach a high ! The local sheep have been cooling under the trees by our house and since it is where DD often hangs out, we needed to clear a lot of sheep nuggets. Brilliant technique with two stubby sticks, into bucket and onto compost heap.

      • Didn't do much on the plot today.

The spuds in the pots had all keeled over so I emptied them out. I've been finding it impossible to keep the compost well Watered and moist and this showed up in the harvest. Small spuds but it's bet than I thought it was going to be.

Harvested the last of the red currants.

Put up the blue hoops over the sprouts.

Started watering the spuds in the ground and it started to rain.

When the rain got strong enough that I couldn't tell which was rain and which was hose I gave up watering, turned off the water and started for home.

It stopped raining at that point.

        • Moved most of the winter brassicas from seedbed to their long term quarters. PSB, Savoy (Ormskirk), January Kings all planted out ready for the promised heavy showers to soak them in. Spent the afternoon buying DIY necessities for the wet weekend ahead (also got a nice bottle of whisky ). Awaited rain. Rain failed to show up. Looked on Penellype's radar link. Town appears to have a rain deflector as big showers approaching and splitting around us. Everyone else is wet apart from us. Now hoping said brassicas are OK until tomorrow's promised rain, and hoping promises are delivered.

Dwarf green and black kales to go in and then that's pretty much us for the season, kick back and await the harvest

Apart from the weeding, and picking the cattypillies, and netting and tying up and cutting back and hoeing and mulching and taking down the old chuck run and forming beds and......

          • Didn't go down to the plot today - don't need to water today as it's still raining and we've had another few mm this morning.

Instead I popped out to Why Vale to see if I could use up a £5 voucher that expired today. Wandered about but wasn't really taken by anything. Didn't fancy any of the veg plants or even any of the seeds.

So I bought a Kiwi Jenny instead.

            • Bit of an odd day!
Mucked out house because got informed someone was coming round at lunchtime. Cleaned out ferrets because said someone was bringing a ferret to be mated! The someone turned up with ferret and her 8 dogs.....and the owner of the ferret, owner of the ferrets husband, parents and there 5 dogs!! Yes you're maths are right 5 people, 13 dogs and one ferret!!! It was mental!! I was sociable for 10 mins. Then I went hid in the kitchen prepping, blanching and freezing my runner beans and pea beans.
After they all bu@@ered off I went to play and relax in my garden. Started planting spuds.

              • Nearly forgot with all the chaos. Spent a good bit of time re staking and re tying up sprouts, broccoli and sunflowers after last night very windy weather. I now have a lovely vase of sunflower because of all the ones that snapped off.

                • Lifted he last if my potatoes in the raised bed and decided to broadcast sow some carrots, Nantes5 supposed to be quick growing but may need to give some protection in a month or so, also filled up a compost box I started filling a box I have made with polystyrene boxes and as I was filling it I scattered some high nitrogen fertilizer over it every 7 or 8inch deep layer, so hopefully this will ,help heat it up and compost it down fairly quickly.
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

                      • Compost Fairy dropped off 2 bags of grass cuttings. This only left room in the car for 12 bags of manure today.

WHEN WILL THIS FLOW OF EXCREMENT END?

Probably Friday as the bay is almost full now.

Popped the thermometer into the pile before I started adding today's lot and the centre was 65°C about 6 inches in.

Mulched a bit, weeded a bit, harvested a bit.

                        Left when it started raining.

                        • Pulled up or chopped down things that have started rotting ( my plants aren't used to wet weather this year. I like that . )
                          Harvest stuff.
Put a load more chillies in the dehydrator.
Defrosted a freezer. I have space for my harvest now it's not full of ice.

                          • Some idiot was collecting manure in the pouring rain - plonka. I would have laughed but I was too busy collecting manure.

9 bags today just to finish off the pile. Took it straight to the plot and dumped it to sort out tomorrow as I didn't want to get the pile soaked while I was carting and filling. Did peek under the taurp and it was steaming. 6 inches down and 6 inches from the edge and it was 65degrees C, 12" down at the centre and it was 70 degrees C so getting nice and hot. Lets hope it keeps that temperature up for a couple of days longer to kill off the seeds and nasties.

Done a bit of harvesting then went home.

No more lugging manure (until the next pile) and it can sit there for a little while till I've built a bin to turn it into. Next I can concentrate on turning the compost pile.or

One thing that hit home moving all those manure bags was that the blue barrel on the path along the edge of the Jungle is a right pain to have to keep manoeuvring past as it almost throws the barrow into the beds (it's bad enough having to manoeuvrer past the pumpkin which is taking over that section of the plot) so I'm going to swap it for a slimline water tank which will give a few extra inches.

The barrel is fed by the extra large polytunnel on the next plot so a little rain actually fills up the barrel nicely. This, of course, means that the barrel is full. I didn't fancy traipsing back and forth with the watering can so I've come up with a cunning plan.

This involved installing a solar panel onto the pumpkin.

                              • -weeding a lot, with the hot weather I found it difficult weeding so have plenty to catch up on, made good progress last 3 trips
                                -heavy watering
-planted spare cucumber and bean plants that look healthy and had been forgotten about for ages, very late, but I thought I'd see how they get on, who knows could get a small crop this late on from them
-made a bamboo teepee for extra beans and cucumbers to climb up
-also planted some tomatoe plants, I know super late I already have tomatoes planted at the right times, just didn't want to chuck the plants and they're in flower so just an experiment to see if I get a few tomatoes off of each, plus I have some spare space to fill, who knows maybe this hot weather has gotten to my head and made me forget normal British weather
