    • I chopped down all my tomatoes today, because the ones that did go red didn't have much taste. So, huge bowl of green tomatoes, and I decided to make green tomato relish.
I chopped, and chopped... and chopped.... I threw all the ingredients together in my massive pot and then realised that I'd not read the instructions. Face palm moment!
I was meant to salt the tomatoes, onion and peppers over night, THEN rinse, add vinegar etc.... Now I've ran out of vinegr, but left it all in the pot and will go buy more tomorrow. Maybe I will make relish tomorrow haha

      • Cleared and weeded 3 beds.
Emptied 4 spud bags. Some had started regrowing, so I replanted. Hopefully I'll have a continues crop.
        Harvested stuff
        Rain stopped play.

        • One of my raised beds is close to an apple tree and a beech hedge and to be honest the crops were below expectations from it this year. Whilst clearing it out and about to add manure for next years project, Trench Celery, I noticed roots in the soil, further investigation showed that the weed proof membrane was not tree root proof, the bed was rather badly infested with fine roots. No wonder the crop was not so good, so a 5 minute job turned into a couple of hours removing said roots. Most of the membrane is still intact, but will only slow down the inevitable, though it has kept the couch grass out that comes through from neighbours unloved garden. Manure now added and I will add more to the trenches when they are constructed next spring and after reading the RHS advice on blanching it, the trenches won't be too deep due to less soil depth, instead I will be using paper/carboard.

          • Well, yesterday and Saturday
            - Built a new raised bed, (having dug-out the potatoes that I'd managed to plant in the line of where the wall of it should go),
            - dug out the compost heap, turned the heap (got about a barrow and a half of good stuff from the bottom of the turned heap
            - marked out the full extent of the other bed that has potatoes in (only dug a small slit bed when I planted the potatoes), cleared the turf and mulched the soil with rotted woodchip
            - extended the path
            - planted garlic

              • Picked up 4 bags of freebie stone chips on my way to work - they're destined for the drainage trench I'm trying to fill at the plot.

                • I was strimming by dawn's early light this morning. And a worklamp…

You don't see many peeps on the plot at that time of day.

                    • Emptied out the greenhouse this afternoon.
Cleaned the glass and swept the benches and the floor.
Lined the benches with polystyrene sheets to hold a little heat as my benches are metal.
                      Planted some daffodils and tulips.
Dead headed the dahlias and cut down some sweet peas that have finished flowering.
All in all a good afternoon and that was after a brisk hours walk in the park.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

                      • On my way to the compost bin carrying the bags of grass left by the compost fairy I noticed that the sweet potatoes were done for and the leaves had blackened and went crispy. Pulled off the tops and dug em up. 4lb 2oz of sweet potatoes - about 4lb better than the last time I tried. I'll see if I can avoid eating some to try and get slips for next year. Tops went in the compost, grass went onto the newly dug bed.

Last of the pumpkins also had also been hit by the cold so I decided to take whats there rather than risk loosing it to frost - 5 pumpkins coming to a total of 38lbs. If I add in the weight of all my Uchiki Kure squash then todays grand haul of squashes and pumpkins came to 39lbs. Just one small Uchiki Kuri

Pulled up a couple of salsify to see how they're doing and, considering they had a Giant Pumpkin sitting directly on top of them they ain't doing too bad, bit small but useable.

Dug up a few Charlotte new potatoes and had them for tea - nice.

                        • Did a bit more towards shutting down one of the tunnels for winter.
Re tied some of the Brussel sprouts.
                          Took down a wigwam.
                          Watered the chillies
Set more chilli seeds drying. Bagged all the chilli seeds that have dried already.
Did a little seed packet shuffling.

                            • Found some great crested newts residing in a flower bed as I was in the process of removing it...
They’re a protected species, and I am very glad we have them, so the half of the bed which I hadn’t already removed will be staying exactly where it is!

Now, what shall I do with the rest of the afternoon?

                                Collected more beans for drying
