  • Finished clearing out one of the GHs
Uprooted all the strawberry runners in there, in case they had any trace of those toxic caterpillars I found last week.
Picked my first and last and only melon and brought it indoors to finish ripening.
Marvelled at all the self seeded plants in the GH. Very healthy tomato seedlings, lettuce, spring onions, oriental leaves and mustards, cape gooseberry and land cress and some baby carrots.
It doesn't matter how hard we try, Nature always knows best.

        • Haven't posted on this thread for a while - I did get to the plot a couple of times this last week, the main thing I've been focusing on is the area that will eventually be my 'recreational' area. Previously I removed some of the weed fabric that's been covering it and removed what was left of the docks and couch grass. The French drains that I'd dug a couple of seasons back needed cleared out, and then I lined with weed fabric and filled about a 4m stretch with the gravel I'd picked up for free last week.
I also made a hibernaculum next to my little pond, basically a hole filled with logs and rubble that'll be covered over with soil eventually.
Once I've got the rest of the trenches backfilled and all the recreational area uncovered, I'll need to level the whole area as best I can (it's on a slope), and figure out whether I want to create some sort of terraced effect before I turf it over in Spring.

Just as you get rid of the 6 large garden bags of grass cuttings you turn your back and theres a builders bag of hedge trimmings appear.

                Spent some time shredding.

                • Spent a couple of hours weeding and planting out 9trays of strawberries.

Our old bed is mostly made up of runners from runners from runners of plants we put in 10 years ago
It's also tangled up with lots of other plants I allowed to grow to give a bit of shade from the viscous midday sun we can get in summer.
This bed is more exposed both to sun and wind , so it'll be interesting to see how it fairs.
                  They are in rows!!!??...yep...actual rows!
Going to make mulching and weeding much easier!

Looking forward to trying out named varieties for a change...no doubt the label fairies will pinch ,or mix up , the labels as usual!

(..needed to hover to be on hand for OH who is rebuilding the wood shed ...I'm a good gofer...and the new strawberry bed is within earshot of the woodshed!
                  Good timing really!)

                  • Did some good work this weekend, Saturday weather was really lovely.
Received my autumn planting sets of onions, shallots and garlic
Dug a new bed and cleared it from couch grass, bindweed and mares tail.
Planted more garlic, c50 cloves of Germidour and Provence Wight think I might have put in enough but might still do a few more early purples.
Harvested more beans - giant beans, CToT, borlotti and brocolli shoots.
Stood and admired garlic peeping out from two weeks ago. Two cloves had been taken out by birds.
Still 1/3 of new bed left to plant. Wondering whether more garlic or the shallot sets.
Shelled dry beans for sowing and eating.

                        • Ate last but one sweetcorn in situ at plot
Woodchip down on the old sweetcorn bed - covered with weed suppresant - probably won't check that bed till spring... haven't got any decent compost in the bins yet so can't add anything to the bed
We've got 3 big piles of woodchip at the plot - I seem to be the only one making use of it - from the smell of pine I guess it will be a bit acidic so must remember to chuck some lime on before use.
Sun came out while I was there so opened a beer and sat about getting a tan and doing now't else.

1574 gin and tonics please Monica, large ones.

                          • Got 3 beds covered. Another bed emptied. Put loads of stuff through the shredder. Emptied lots of finished pots into compost and broke all the roots up with a spade. Watered chillies.
Harvested stuff. Went for a walk with the dogs.

                            • popped down to the plot to do some harvesting, but didn’t stay long as I was getting rained on...
Made 2 large batches of soup, an apple pie to use up the last of the apples which have been blocking access to the downstairs toilet for weeks, and washed another batch of pots in the garage.

ID:	2381144I have planted up a strawberry barrel I bought at auction. I used revamped compost consisting of old potting compost mixed with sieved leafmould and sieved home made compost. I also used an olla made from two unglazed clay pots as in photo. I think this will be helpful once I take the pot into the polytunnel in early spring. The runners are my own so the whole thing didn’t cost me much except a happy hour.
