Tomatoes 2018 - What will you be attempting to grow this year

Well I have started my initial planning for the coming season already, but with the generous donations following the 2016/2017 tomato seed swap, (Cheers again Scarlet) I am really spoilt for choice!

I did a little "Gardening by candlelight" yesterday evening! looking through various seeds



And still none the wiser!

Just wondered what varieties you other lovely people were having a go at growing this coming 2018 season!

I'm planning on growing the following:

Indoors:
Shirley, Balconi red and yellow

In the greenhouse:
Shirley, Brandy Boy (new variety to me) and either Roma or Crimson Crush

In the growhouse (half outdoors):
Shirley, Megabyte

Outdoors:
Ferline, Sungold, Crimson Crush, Balconi red and yellow, Mountain Magic, Garden Pearl (on the fence)

We've had poor results with greenhouse toms (wrong location, too sheltered we think) so rolling back to what we know is successful:
Tumbling tom red and yellow in the outdoor stacking pot
Red Alert in the outdoor bed

That gives us enough (so long as the dog stops eating them off the bush )

100s and 1000s from saved seed from Cadalot a few years back. Those ones beginning with R that I got from Deano last year and maybe another cherry variety yet to be decided. Possibly a blight resister like crimson crush - my plot is *very* prone to blight.

I've given up on non-cherry types I think. With my erratic care they tend to split more often - seem to take longer to ripen generally and appear to be more prone to blight.

Must admit Lady P, I didn't grow "Sungold" this year, and my "Grandkids" didn't speak to me for weeks because of it!

So they are defoe number one on my "Hit List"

Balders! Try "Shirley"

Although it is an F1 she is a very reliable cropper! Nice tasting fruits too!

Ya see! over the years, even JJ, Nellie n a few others seem to want to grow "Black" varieties! Must admit, the taste from these is far superior!

An experimental year for me with regards to tomatoes. I'm not even a huge fan of them but my wife suggested making pasta sauce from scratch which I'm completely fine with

Deano your predicament is exactly why I don't join seed circles I would have to plant all of them ! Especially the varieties I'd not grown before. No will power, me .

I would welcome any suggestions. Last year, we attempted to grow Gardener's Delight. Swmbo bought the plant from a local DIY store and it was about six inches tall at that time. Whilst it grew well in a growbag, it didn't produce fruit until quite late and meant it got hit by blight come October. I harvested the green toms and managed to encourage them to turn red indoors. Tasted lovely but small (think marble size).

I'm attempted SFG this year so I thought two tomato plants would work well. I'm considering one determinate and one indeterminate to have a play around with.

Are there any varieties that a numpty like me would have more success with?

Deano your predicament is exactly why I don't join seed circles

I looked at the huge collection from the swap, and put them away.................. repeat ad infinitum. I'm not good at decisions when I'm spoilt for choice

At some stage I will have to - but must remember not to cram too many in - cos it only ends in tears (and Botrytis) before the end of the season
