Tomatoes 2018 - What will you be attempting to grow this year
Not a clue yet!
There'll be a couple of little ones to grow in pots on the GH shelf - which I will start soon. Rambling Red, Tumbling summat and???
Then there'll be the parthenocarpic bush - Legend and Mountain princess
and the cordons - Black Icicle, Gardener's delight and some Sausage shaped ones
and +++++ Who knows what will fall out of the seedbox. Maybe one for each letter of the Alphabet ('cos I'm nuts).
Oh yes - a friend at the plot who doesn't like toms bought one plant last year - a grafted cherry type from Homebase (I think) - that one plant probably produced as much fruit as all mine put together (blight did knacker half my fruits)
So I think I will give that a shot up at the UH GH on the plot
sigpic
1574 gin and tonics please Monica, large ones.
Goldrush (yellow currant bush type) was great last year, plentiful sweet tiny fruit and it lasted longer than others when blight hit, so I'll be doing a few of these.
Crimson Crush if I can get the seed going, took three attempts last year and if I'd paid full price for the seeds I'd have given up on this one!
Mountain Magic
Balconi Red / Cherry Falls for the baskets.
These are the definates though I'll probably end up with twenty more as some seeds are out of date this year so I'll chuck them in a pot and see what comes up, with Toms that probably means all of them...
I would welcome any suggestions. Last year, we attempted to grow Gardener's Delight. Swmbo bought the plant from a local DIY store and it was about six inches tall at that time. Whilst it grew well in a growbag, it didn't produce fruit until quite late and meant it got hit by blight come October. I harvested the green toms and managed to encourage them to turn red indoors. Tasted lovely but small (think marble size).
I'm attempted SFG this year so I thought two tomato plants would work well. I'm considering one determinate and one indeterminate to have a play around with.
Are there any varieties that a numpty like me would have more success with?
MB! I seriously wouldn't beat yourself up over last years escapades to be honest!
It wasn't a very good year for Tomatoes, even for us (and dear I say this) "Experienced Growers"
Firstly I'd stick with "Gardeners Delight" for your Determinate and "Garden Pearl" for your Indeterminate, they are both pretty good "Staples" for a beginner! and I certainly don't mean that in an inconsiderate way!
"Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad"
I'm with Deano. Gardeners delight is a very good tomato. It's been on my grow list every year since I started growing. And last year was an appsalutl shocker for tomato growing!
Me to....I love gardeners delight, cherry toms are generally very easy to grow and are more likely to give you a reasonable crop before being hit by blight. Bigger toms generally have a longer growing/ripening season, so if you are growing outside I would choose a cherry or a medium size tom.
Cutting back this year.
The seed box is still closed but I will have a few staples on the lidt.
Gardeners delight.
Sungold.
Crimson Crush.
Picollo.
Ferline.
Ailsa Craig.
Big Boy.
Shirley.
A few more to be decided at a later date.
Hope its a good growing year.
And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.
The usual 22 flower Buckets in the back garden and I want to grow my Crimson Crush 4th generation self saved seeds and Rapunzel on the allotment and lots of short bush varieties in the greenhouses assuming I manage to get the new plot ready and the third greenhouse (2nd Plot) erected in time.
In January 2017 when rain stopped play on the allotment, I created a three year plan for 2017 - 2019 that when out of the window when I accidently bought more tomato seeds in the Wyevale seed sale Alans Allotment: Rain Stops Play
So the final cut for 2018 will be determined this month on a day when rain stops play again.

Thanks for the reassurance. I was convinced it was me not doing things right. I was looking at moneymaker but that's an indeterminate too so was looking at determinate to see what was more successful in my garden. I'll look at Garden Pearl and Gardeners Delight this year.
Remember that most outdoor tomato plants will succumb to blight, although there are a couple that claim to be blight resistant. Don't be disheartened when this happens.

That's a lot of varieties. It's remarkable the difference a bit of geography makes - I'm really too far north and west to grow tomatoes outside with much success - so you've very lucky you can do that. It's really the polytunnel or nothing for me.

Same here, polytunnel growing only. They really don't like being outside.
