The Ferline tomatoes are still in full flow, but the Balconi below are nearly finished.

Apples ready for harvest (I picked them later today). French beans and Balconi tomatoes looking cold. Florence fennel in the green pot in the middle. Some of the bedding plants have died, so it looks a bit messy.

The Shirley tomatoes in the growhouse are just about hanging on, as are the runner beans in there (the ones on the arch have finished and been cut down). The 2 pots of Garden Pearl tomatoes have finished. Plenty of carrots and some brokali under the net.

The cucumber doesn't like the cold and has died, and the tomatoes are not far behind. Brassicas (calabrese, kale and spring cabbage) under nets are having problems with aphids.

You can't really see from the pic, but the bonfire smoke drifting across the allotments in the sunshine yesterday made for very atmospheric lighting...

End of October in the Garden

There was ice on the car windscreen this morning,I should remove all the tomato plants by now but this is what it looks like now,bit messy while I wait for the annuals to die down. Once I’ve pulled the tomatoes out I’ll put the peas in,I might do that today...
There’s rocket leaves under the net curtain & mini sweet peppers in the pot next to it. In the third photo at the bottom you can see there’s a swede growing the leaves have been ruined by caterpillars but I should’ve covered them. In the fourth photo my leeks are lost under the dahlias, they might grow alright at an angle. The last photo has some courgettes that I should pick,I cut the plants back a couple of weeks ago, they’ve got powdery mildew, milk helped & the new growths been good, they look a little bit floppy from the frost,I’ll cut them down soon, see how long they can go on for

Still plenty of colour, although the Japanese maple is losing its leaves quickly now. The Ferline tomatoes are looking sad, except for the one next to the hotbin, which is producing new growth and flowers! There are still a few green fruit on them. The nasturtiums are a good indicator that this area of the garden is warmer than the allotment, where the same variety of nasturtiums were killed by frost.

Looking a bit empty now - the fruit trees (white currant, apple and apricot) are losing their leaves and the tomato that was in the pot on the left was cut down yesterday. The bedding plants are about finished and only the Florence fennel looks happy. Yes, that is a ripe strawberry in the black pot on the fence - it has now been eaten!

Everything looking very empty here. The growhouse contains a Shirley tomato that has finished and needs removing, plus some of the begonias and fuchsias from the fence, sheltering from the frost. The Sungold tomatoes that were growing up the blowoway frames were cut down yesterday. Still plenty of carrots and a couple of brokali plants under the net.

Just the strawberries and blueberry bushes here now. This area would normally house the broccoli and calabrese plants over winter but these are now at the allotment. Buckets of compost are waiting for reuse or to be taken to the allotment to top up the raised beds.

Herbs and strawberries on the path and in the cold frame and hanging basket. Kale and spring cabbage under the near net, calabrese under the individual nets and one lone surviving tomato plant (Crimson Crush).

November 4th - looking autumnal. Cherry and pear trees are the most colourful.
Ash leaves mostly fallen, oak are thinking about changing - maybe by December.

All looking quite autumnal now, all the summer veg have died back. Lots of tidying to be done, but I’m trying to dig out some more carpet first before the ground gets frozen

                  Mid November

Ive moved some pots of French marigolds around the patio & also added a Calendula from the raised bed. Photo three has my swede, nasturtium & strawberries in the bed with radish in a pot on the step. The apple & grape have been pruned a bit. Photo four is where I sowed meteor peas under the metal shelving yesterday, with some pale blue crocus bulbs in front of the lavender,it all looked disturbed by mice today so I put a little bit of old tomato compost over the exposed peas. Photo five is a close up of my RDoY potatoes next to two pots of rocket.

Tomatoes and most of the leaves have now gone. The nasturtuims are still flowering, but looking rather miserable.

Looking rather bare as most things have been cleared away for the fence painting. White currant, apple and apricot trees have lost their leaves. The lawn did look nice until it got trampled during the painting, but should grow back. Hopefully the fence will not now need doing for another few years.

Still plenty of carrots under the net, plus some brokali starting to sprout. The plants in the growhouse are mainly begonias and fuchsias off the fences. The greenery in bucket 20 is self seeded mizuna and pak choi.

Strawberries on the shelves need their water trays emptying, as do the blueberries. The net covers carrots that are currently being harvested. Otherwise this area is mainly being used to store compost.

Strawberries and herbs on the path. Spring cabbage and kale under the nearest net. Calabrese under the taller nets with fennel behind in the green pot. Everything looks much emptier than usual as most of the brassicas are at the allotment. Next door's cat is in one of his favourite lookout spots on top of their shed.

I took these photos on Tuesday 18th,it’s a bit messy/natural looking the second photo has some rooster potatoes in the black container & a few carrots amongst self seeded nemesia in the other one. The fourth photo shows my meteor peas that have popped up (I thought I’d sowed them too late in November,I thought they’d probably rotted but what an amazing pea!) It’s nice seeing some new shoots out there,I still haven’t planted my garlic or onions. The last photo shows my swede in the bed with strawberries growing into the lawn,I should move that soon

A careful camera angle here, showing mostly bits I have tidied up for winter, and my new terraced beds. The half left of shot still to be tidied from last year, but was totally waterlogged today
