  • Wondering about trying mushrooms

I hope this is the best section... I only recently discovered that growing mushrooms is seemingly not too hard, and the availability of cheap (£10) kits.

I'd be interested to try it but wondered about yield, approx cost/kg, different options, etc. Kit Vs DIY for a noob, what would you recommend?

I've been looking at trying some oyster mushrooms. Got as far as collecting a builder's bag 3/4 full of dried leaves and buying some large clear plastic bags.

When the weather warms up a bit I may get round to ordering some spawn and starting the project :-)

The recent option I have seen was oyster mush rooms in/on used coffee grounds.

Cannot recall the method fully but it seemed to be: Coffee grounds, Mushroon Spore, mixed in a plastic bag. mycelium grows. To shock the mushroom production I think the bag was put into a cool location and at some stage slits put in the bag.

Would get a bit "smelly" I guess and the requirement is the different areas to enable the cycle to complete and produce the mushrooms.

Mushroom growing seems to a few options as the medium, straw, sawdust, logs, coffee grounds and toilet roll I have seen. Suppose that means you could use say 50/50 coffee grounds and pure sawdust. Mention this as I have seen a wood place with bags of sawdust placed outside for people. Their extractors collect it all.

I bought two mushroom kits for a tenner each a few months ago. Supposedly you're supposed to get at least two but maybe even three crops from them. I got a few sprouting mushrooms to start with but the vast majority never grew any bigger than about 5mm across the top. I managed to crop one mushroom from each tray which were both about 80mm in circumference and they tasted beautiful but at a tenner each it wasn't value for money.
