  • Unknown seedling growing in with my chilli plants

    Hi guys

About 10 days ago I planted some chilli seeds and all of them have germinate... Almost. What I noticed was that there was a random seedling amongst my chillies and it looks nothing like any seedling that I've grown before.

I'm convinced it isn't a chilli plant. I didn't add any non chilli seeds to my seeds before planting so it's a real mystery to me. I put two seeds per cell. I planted these seedlings in some coir compost which I bought in block form. I've attached a picture of the mystery seedling below... Anyone have any idea what it could be?

I'm going to keep it and see what it actually is but just really want to know what it could be.

    Thanks

Still a little early to tell I think. You have 2 options pull it out assuming it's a weed seed in your compost or transplant it and see what it turns into. I'd go with the latter at least for a couple of weeks till you need the space for your chillies

Yeah, really have no idea how it got there. Will try pull it out and put it to the side somewhere and just see what it is. I thought it might have been something in the coir but it germinated at the exact same time as the chilli seedling.

If it is a weed, it'll probably grow quicker than the seedlings.

Very good photo, but it's impossible to tell until at least the first set of true leaves open, and possibly not even then.

If it is a weed seed in the coir then it makes sense that it germinated at the same time as the chillies because that's when you have watered the coir and put it in a warm place etc. The seed will have been dormant while the coir was dry and in a block.

Interesting haha. I will be keeping it to see what it is.

Nightshade though. Strange whatever it is. Not sure how long the coir brick had been left dried for it to have kept hold of some seed to then sprout later. Does nightshade even grow near coconuts for it to be in the coir?

It's only officially a 'Weed' if you dont want it to be there, or its growing in the wrong place,

move it, grow it , you might be pleasantly surprised......or Not. lol

I'm assuming the middle one with the white stalk and round seed leaves.
