  • Can I use debris netting for a carrot fly screen

Saw an article where they use 2 foot high barrier to keep carrot fly out of your carrot bed.

I first thought of using fleece but I think the wind would shred it.

How about debris netting, any one used it for this.

Is it fine enough to keep out the carrot fly.

    Any particular colour best

thats what i have used, but NOT as a 2 high fence, cover the lot as you would for greens, most were good,i also had some onion sets around the outside ,read on here about it,do idea what worked,or indeed both, but i had nice carrotts down the lottie, also had nice ones at home, with no protection, last year nowt grew,so hope for this one, good luck lad.

no experience with debris netting but I have used wind/shade netting to keep out pheasants and rabbits, it is fine enough for carrot fly and is cheap and very durable, I just cable tied it to bamboo , creating a 3' high barrier

No to debris netting but fleece all over can work. You are right that unprotected from the wind it can get shredded over time. If you can have a wind break or plant beside a fence/shed etc. it helps.
Companion planting works with typically smelly plants like Marigolds, onions etc. confusing the carrot fly looking for a meal.

Also the carrot fly travel very low to the ground so putting carrots in a 18" high raised bed or in MFB pots can be quite effective. A combination of raised bed and marrigolds has proven effective enough for me in the past but this winter I've had Fleece and am still harvesting fresh carrots now.

Blue debri netting worked on my carrot bed.I didn't do a control bed without is though, so maybe there were just no carrot fly's about!

Left is enviromesh with a blue debri netting back and right is blue debri netting. No carrot fly evident on either bed. I have the covers off now because the carrot fly season is over and it makes it easier to harvest the carrots!

For the last couple of years I've had success with carrots grown under debris netting for the entire season. But this year I want to try some carrots on my new raised square foot garden this year. I was thinking of making a few one foot cubes from 12 pieces of roofing lath, covered on 5 sides by debris netting. Will this work? Anybody got a better idea?

Blue water pipe with Debris netting, and both have worked perfectly well.

I don't believe the 2ft high fence rubbish as if they could not get higher than that how do they manage to get anywhere anyway? If I'm going to put a barrier up it's going right over, if they are that small then they are more than likely lifted by updrafts and thermal currents
