Agreed about the climbing courgettes - they're just sprawling ones that would rather roam across the ground that climb!

Since Tromba has so many fans, shall we have a little Challenge for 2018? The funniest or longest Tromba grown?

I have a hop growing on chicken wire. There is also cucamelon (if you like them)

A search for more unusual veg brought up:

              Malabar spinach

Amaranth "Garnet Red", not really a climber but as this one apparently grows 6ft would probably like a bit of support in rough weather

              Endless wonder.

Sweet potatoes must have sun - I tried to grow them in a part shaded greenhouse last year and it was hopeless. Lots of growth but the biggest root was less than 1/2 inch thick.

                You could try outdoor cucumbers.

I'd probably go with blackcurrants and loganberries - should be easy to net and they'll both enjoy the rich soil and cope with light shade - but I'm too lazy to put much effort on to veg growing these days.

Another plus point - the flowers are lovely.

                      Thanks for all your ideas.
I'm going to go through my seed hoard and pull out anything that climbs, and keep them separate from freestanding veggies. That way, whenever a spare bit of fence appears, I can shuffle the seed packets and find something suitable. Don't be surprised if I mix all the seeds up together, will you?

We grow butternut squash in the potato barrel after the first earlies (next to the apple tree so we get some weird looks ) They'd climb. Also had some success with scrambling Gherkins, if you like a pickle
