  • Mine are bursting out of their little pots in the propogator so will have to be potted on and put in the gh today. OH building some sturdy arches so some will go over those, some will go on the fence between us and neighbours. Soil not great there and quite crowded so will take the bottom out of a pot and fill with compost then shove on the ground.

May have to find homes for some of them!
    Another happy Nutter...

    • OK, reneguing on my promise. Drizzle stopped play yesterday, so everything is held up a bit. But the good news is Mr Snoop reckons my idea for a tromba support is a go-er. And we have everything required. So this week it will happen at some point. We're forecast thunderstorms every afternoon this week, so not quite sure when we'll be able to do it, but we will be doing it.

Sylvan, we'll be using stock fencing donated by our neighbour.

Does limiting the number of fruit growing make them bigger, or doesn't it make any difference? Plus, I'm still pondering growing a trailing one to eat as courgetti (perfect if the seeds are at the end) and for making chutney, and having the dangling one for winter squash. Does that sound possible?

      • I planted two out today - might be a little preemptive but it's a fruit day in the biodynamic calendar and they were looking like they were ready for more space. I tucked them up in an environmesh cage and watered with seaweed extract. I think they need names :-D

Depends how big you want them. If you're trying to win a competition for longest squash, maybe limit them, otherwise leave them to it. One of mine grew to about 50cm length, but most averaged about 30cm when just left to get on with it. They're pretty vigorous plants.

                • ^Thanks. Not sure if maybe bigger ones might store better than smaller ones. Plus, generally interested to know how big they might grow.

                    • Mine are (politely) called Richard. There'll be Little Richard, Big Richard, Richard III and so on.
                      They're certainly not girlies

                        • Well, I don't generally name my plants, but just for you: the climbing one will be Tommy and the trailing one will be Dorsey.

Anyway, Mr Snoop is going to be making my arch today. Some discussion as to how high I want it. In the end, we settled on "as high as you can make it". Which I hope won't be too high. But once he's on a mission, I'm not allowed to interfere.

Which is all to say: sowing today (weather permitting).

Edited to add: Are yours there yet, Jack?
