  • Parsnip Shoots

Hi guys i pulled up my first few parsnips over the weekend, and its the first time i have grown them. Though they tasted fine, a couple of them had a few side shoots coming of them, and i was wondering what causes this and is there anyway off stopping in the future.

    Hello little green man,

Parsnips have a habit of forking especially if the ground has too much manure in it. They just can;t work out which tasty morsle to go after so can finish up looking like demented spiders.

The best way is, I have found, is to make a funnel shaped hole with a metal rod in ground that was manured for a crop LAST year. Fill it with fine soil and then sow 5 or 6 parsnips on the top. Thin to one when they are large enough.

Best of luck, it works for me
