  • When Is A Nut Not A Nut?

Thoughts please on Tigernuts. Chufa White or Chufa Black

I blame the seed catalogue for this but......................they state that you dig them up and eat the 'nuts' which are tubers either fresh or dried as the frosts arrive.

However, are these like artichokes where you can leave some in for next year or is it a case of one plant a year?

        OK Tigernuts -

        Invasive so best in pots.
        Treat like artichokes.
        May taste like tigers?
Banned for some fishing - I don't have a pond.

Yes Snoop I imagine they are especially when I have few teeth left but I have learnt to be a very patient gummer and sucker.

And, yes I can hear the various not thread related thoughts from here.

I have eaten them raw. Good taste, but tough and the skin is a bit bitty in the mouth.

Here, they get whizzed up in water and some kind of sweetener and then strained and served as the drink horchata. Very nice.

Wonder what the chance is of turning them into some kind of nut butter?

Tiger nuts! I used to get them from a well known wholefood shop, but then they stopped stocking them. Not had any for years. I loved them as a snack even though they are really hard to chew. Lovely flavour though.
I had no idea you could buy seeds and gyo. Where did you get seeds from, Lumpy?

Remember them when I was a boy, though I found them a hell of a chew then, so impossible now that I'm on the www. (Wonderful World of Wernets) But "Tiger Milk" is definitely a thing, as they say.

                      Might have a go.

A nut is not a nut when it get's "Embroiled" in chocolate and as a sticker stuck on it saying "Nutella"

Me and my "Grand Kiddies" could live on the stuff!

I didn’t see seeds MH it was a plant. £9.99 each so that’s why I wondered if they were like artichokes and could be left to get on with it year in year out.

Is Nutella made from tiger it’s?

I've just had a look here: the advice is buy tiger nuts (from any source) and soak for 48 hours, changing the soaking water repeatedly. Then put in a pot full of loose sandy soil. Sow the tiger nuts and cover with 5 cm of soil. Once they've put down roots and sent up nice green leaves, transplant to their permanent home.

I also note they're grown in Valencia. So, nice and warm, lots of sun, no frosts. Apparently, they also like loose, sandy soil and lots of water.

                              Good luck!
