  • Build or buy netting protection?

I liked the look of this >clicky< but it looks a bit pricey at £80.

Building one here >clicky< would cost £100.

So I looked here >clicky< and building just the frame would cost £140.

Similar story on ebay with aluminium tubing.

What I'm after are two cages that I can just lift off, put to one side, and tend to the raised beds, and replace when I'm done. Preferably something that won't fly off when it's windy. I was considering enviromesh/veggiemesh for netting.

Are there any better places to buy or build?

Saving money on this sort of thing rather depends on what you can scrounge or re-use for a framework - an obvious candidate would be tubing from an old poly-tunnel, a less obvious possibility could be an old circular trampoline frame cut in half.

I haven't looked at your clickys but PVC pipe can be used to build all sorts of frames.

I bought four of these cane mate from home base 99p each & got cheap off cuts of net curtains from the range,I peg the net to hold it still on the frame,I don’t know how else to attach it because I don’t want holes in the net? I use bricks & large stones to hold it all down,if you run out of stones you can bury it in the soil a bit

Wot VC said cheap as chips compared to your clickys I bought two greenhouse frames from B&Q for a £5 each when they were getting rid of old stock - or collect a greenhouse frame off Freecycle they pop up on a regular basis or large hoops and netting like this

I cobbled together a frame with some canes and tied them together.
Messy, untidy, inconvenient but the price was right !

Here's mine made from old windbreak poles, 3 canes, some piping and covered with debris netting.

A wooden rectangle of 2"x2" that is the size of your bed. Drill holes half way through from one side to suit PVC pipe or some of that Blue water pipe. Set the pipe in tall loops from one side to the other but stagger each side so they overlap/cross for strength. Cover in the netting/clear plastic of choice and even hinge them to the side of the raised bed for easy access.

See Micheal Brothertons video, about 20 seconds in for the blue frame.

Where he hinges the whole thing nicely.

If you can get the pipe as offcuts on a building site and some used scaffold netting too it might cost you a pair of hinges and some timber.
