Shallot seed/set mishap

Hey all,

new to the forum and first post so if this thread has been started in the wrong area please remove, mods.
My partner bought some shallot sets last month and confused the instructions for sowing seeds with planting sets, so she has accidentally planted the sets indoors. As it stands the shoots are all about 4" tall and are becoming a bit too big for their current pots. I've found very little information about planting out shallot sets as I know this isn't the usual method. My question is, will she be able to transplant these to the allotment once the weather has improved, or has she doomed them to a life of container growing?
Any help and advice is greatly appreciated. Cheers!

I think your partner did well to anticipate the bad weather by planting them in pots. Once the weather improves, you can plant them out and they'll have a head start on those who plant them outdoors to start with.

Thanks veggiechicken! Will the sets be okay in their pots until plant out? (they are only 4" deep). Or will they have to be transplanted into bigger pots until we plant them outside when the weather clears? Cheers!

They should be OK. Look for roots coming out of the bottom of the pots.
Where are you? I'm hoping the weather will pick up very soon!

I normally plant my Shallots out in February. Not fancying digging through the snow to plant shallots, so mine are still in the packet. As soon as the snow goes they will be in the ground though, so you have nothing to worry about. You will need to harden them off though so they don't get a shock.

I usually start all mine off in a standard seed tray with about the lower 1/3 under the soil...about an inch apart. Somewhere light but cool.
Once the roots start to show signs of matting I put them outside during the day for up to a week and then gently shake them apart and then plant outside .
You are ahead of me, I'll probably start mine mid March

I planted some in a raised bed about 2weeks ago but covered them with some hessian and thin carpet when the bad weather was predicted !iv'e got another 35 in 3inch peat pots in the greenhouse i'll plant them out when things pick up. atb Dal.

Here is another 1 hehehehe,mine are sitting in compost/cell trays in the cold grow house,both shallots and onion sets,they will all catch up when the weather dries up a bit and sun comes out,the reason i do mine like this is,not only do they have some roots,but you know where they are,and what is viable,no gaps and the birds will not pull out,plus more thinking time as where they will go,sounds like you doing fine,good growing
