Yes, the frost has had same effect on my brassicas. Has also sucked the life out of the leaves of the primroses that are coming into flower, and the fresh green grass.

You could say it has reset the calendar down here.

My perpetual kale looks like a load of soggy paper chains. Too much ground water did it no favours before the cold stuff came but now it looks absolutely trashed.

I'm sure a lot of plants wither when the ground is frozen and they cant take up water, so they wither like yours have. If that is the case, I'm sure they'll be ok.

The frost didn't get a chance with mine - the wind shredded them :-(

Only the week or so before I'd trimmed off all the poor leaves damaged by the "real" winter to just leave good condition leaves and buds - they were responding beautifully, new leaf growth and flowers galore. Then the Beast struck :-(

They should recover - primroses are fairly tough plants. You probably notice that most of the plants that have been damaged or are unhappy are big leaved. The combination of frost and wind is not good for big leaves as the wind sucks the water out of them as well as shredding them, and they can't replace the water until the ground defrosts. But hardy plants are built to cope with this - if they couldn't they wouldn't be hardy. Its not great but it probably won't be fatal (although obviously there are limits).

Winter may not be over yet - it is only early March. We have been spoiled with warm winters in recent years, but this winter is different and remember, it is more common to have snow at Easter than at Christmas.

Toke the fleece, 1 layer, off the autumn planted strawberries last night and look as green as grass, where as the uncovered 1 year ones look like a blow torch has been on them. First time have had a clear comparison. Would imagine fleece would have helped the broc and kale above in thread
