Advice on leeks

Hi. Now the snow has almost gone I�ve been Looking about trying to plan where veggies will go.
I have some leeks which I planted late in summer/early autumn. I got them in a garden centre and assumed it was the right time to plant. They are alive but haven�t really grown much. My question is are they likely to grow to a worthwhile size or will they just run to seed when it gets warmer? They are in nice little raised beds and if they aren�t going to grow I�ll dump them and use the space for something else.

I find leeks temperamental things and have yet to find a foolproof way of growing them. They do bulk up a bit in the spring before they bolt, but they also start to become tough and stringy after about the end of April. You can eat leeks at any size, so rather than dumping them, why not eat them?

There’s not more than a mouthful in the lot of them! But maybe they would give a zing in a stir fry or something.

My pathetic leeks

Here is a photo of my grass-like leeks. They don�t even qualify as baby leeks.

Perhaps we should have a thread on �my greatest disaster of the month�. Actually I might be able to contribute on a weekly basis.

They look like the first leeks I ever grew ML,do you start them off in a deep container? It lets them get to pencil thickness for planting out it’s a trick I learnt on here a couple of years ago,haven’t seen it mentioned this year,some food containers are deep no need to buy anything fancy

I bought these from a garden centre in a little Polystyrene tray. They were minuscule. I think they just didn’t have enough time to grow before the winter came. I have sown some seeds of my own and I’m hoping for better results.

I grew Musselburgh last year - started them off in loo rolls full of compost and they grew pretty well.

although I've not started this year's crop off yet (last year I think I sowed them in November?)
