Best ph soil testing kit / method?

Thanks to everyone who replied to my thread about moss on my veg patch.

A follow up question:

Having looked at ph testing kits does anyone have any opinions on the merits of old fashioned one's with test tubes etc and the newer electronic type with a probe you put in the soil?

My recollection of soil test kits is comparing a jar of mud against a strip of colours.
None of the colours was mud!
