Aldi seeds.

In Aldi yesterday for some of there seeds. Trying to understand how I have to pay between £2-3. for a packet from known suppliers when Aldi can sell 6 and at times 8 different variety's for 99p. [6-8 PER PACKET 99P] . Have used there seed for several seasons and get if anything better results. Some of the packets have more seed in them than the dearer ones. Although there are variety's that I would not normally use it is worth trying them.

the Aldi/Lidl model is interesting.
I think they do a number of things
1) buy end of product runs (eg I had some cordless power tools and an older Bosch power pack fitted straight on it) - so it's a bonus for the manufacturer who has paid for the R&D of the line in the original order
2) short-term runs and a "refund-only" model means they don't need to keep a stock/contingency to keep it available at all times
3) switching suppliers - they just buy end-of-line capacity from various suppliers, so they don't pay for consistency of, eg fit.
4) lower profit margins - I don't think they look to make money on the special buys, they just keep the footfall through the door.

I have a lot of their stuff, but it can be hit-and-miss. Never tried their seeds.

I just got 3 packs of 6 trailing fuschia plants at £1.69 a pack
Potted them on and the look OK
Last year they did well.
But you have got to check them as the shops don't seem to look after the plants

The Ald/Lid/£ shop seeds are limited to a couple of varieties - maybe 1 beetroot, 2 carrots, 1 onion, so, if you don't mind what sort of beetroot you grow, they're fine. If you want a specific variety or an F1 , you need to go to a more expensive retailer and pay more for less seeds.
You pays your money and takes your choice.

I buy my seeds from ebay. And have done so for years. There are several reputable suppliers with +ve feedback in the thousands.. like Premier Seeds Direct . You can buy common seeds for 99p plus postage.. and if you combine orders, spread a limited postage over several packets.

I also find less common seeds are less than half price of established suppliers..


Works for me. (I also buy Aldi seeds.) I'm an exiled Scot so careful with money (or mean if you like )

Yes I know the dread flowers, must be old age sending me barmy.
Basically it's to appease her who must be obeyed !
Especially as I will be planting a row of spuds in the front border !!

I got the herbs (6 in 1) last year they did well. I've just sown some more from the same packet and I've still got some left.
I've got the pea & bean packet this year.
I like them because you get to try a few things you wouldn't necessarily buy on their own.

Aldi/Lidl seeds are fine Bob, as has been mentioned the main thing is lack of varieties so if you just want to grow Tomatoes or any veg for that matter & are not bothered what variety they are then they are good.

Was the only shop I could get onion seed (local) after the 1st lot failed to germinate.

They are in and germinated after 9 days. . Know its getting a bit late.

Getting sets for other half that failed and the shallots.

Just need to decide on what to do the remaining packs.

Last year I just grew the rest to see what they were like. Now I will be growing them again. The fun in gardening to me is planting seeds and seeing what comes up.

Love the aldi multi pack seeds, as well as the 29p seeds from Lidl. Im going to try grow more veg for the sale days, and 99p for a pack of eight varieties is ideal. I also got the £1.69 flower plugs, several of them in fact. They have been potted on and seem quite happy in the conservatory.

Brought 10 packets off ebay from a supplier I saw recommended on here, premier seeds, think was £8 for 10 packets. So far germination has been near 100%
